2005: PICK PRAISES FEDERALIST SOCIETY IN SPEECH

**Exclusive**

The DRUDGE REPORT has obtained exclusive excerpts from a speech Bush Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers made to the DC Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society on April 29, 2005.

At the speech Miers’ declared, “You [the Federalist Society] are an important ally on many issues, especially in our battles to ensure for our Nation a distinguished Federal judiciary, a judiciary the American people deserve.”

MORE

Miers went on: “There is a reason White House Counsels have sought out your organization for over twenty years: the influence your organization has developed within the legal society and society as a whole.

"From your educational publications to your various speaking events to your network of legal professionals, you have stimulated an on-going debate about the principles of the Constitution. Our Nation is better for it. And as this debate has raged your organization has grown tremendously.”

A Republican strategist told of the excerpts was not surprised. “Harriet Miers has at least five lawyers who are members of the Federalist Society on her own staff in the White Counsels Office.”

Harriet Miers is famous for saying nice things to everyone to grease the wheels. She keeps a special jar of M&Ms in her office and welcomes anyone to come in and help themselves.

She keeps M&Ms? Oh, my God! We must sink her nomination immediately!!!!!!

People often change in their life.... from liberal to conservative is more the general rule. RARELY do they make a second change.

As in "Bush did not follow through on the campaign promise to nominate judges in the mold of Scalia and Thomas"? Funny thing is, neither one of us knows whether Miers is going to be "in the mold" now, do we?

I wouldn't necessarily call that praise. There is no real value assessment there. Just a finding of fact that they add to the debate.

I'd like to see the full speech, too, but it's possible that jstolzen is correct, at least based on the excerpts.

Compare these comments with the warm remarks and conservative red meat that JRB offers in her speech, "A Whiter Shade of Pale", to the Federalist Society:

"She keeps M&Ms? Oh, my God! We must sink her nomination immediately!!!!!!"

Lots of diff colors, shows a propensity for pushing diversity! Also rumor has it she puts the brown ones on TOP giving M & Ms of a certain color an unfair advantage, She must be STOPPED!!

Is it me or do some FReepers have the liberal "damned if you do, damned if you don't" mentality? The same crap they gripe about Bush-haters doing, they do. Hypocrites

You nailed it!

She keeps a special jar of M&Ms in her office and welcomes anyone to come in and help themselves.

Also her boyfriend around her younger years said that even then she was super discreet and seemingly did not confide in him any of her innermost goals, etc. That does not make the basis for a good marriage. She is obviously a loner but I am still very surprised that she didn't vent or confide. Lone she-wolf.

"My President nominated an undistinguished, inexperienced, 60-year-old enigma to the Supreme Court and all I got was some lousy M&Ms."

Her jar of M&Ms was one of the few facts the White House released about her when they announced her nomination.

WHEREAS nothing you just said has not been babbled before.

Let the process take place. I am really beginning to doubt the "millions" you speak of actually exist. The more people are forced to engage this subject I contend the more people are saying let the process go forward and are questioning these, unelected mind you, "esteemed group of Republican commentators and pundits".

Please tell me who appointed this "esteemed" rabble the end all be all vetters of all things conservative and Republican. Also, why is it we are not allowed to disagree with them? Is it possible they could be *GASP* wrong?

"Reports." I think one calls this gossip. OK, "reports" from whom?

The "juicy" bits are seventeen years old. And the NAACP had relatively little to do with the sinking of Bork's nomination. You seem to be reading a lot back into events two decades old.

I think the same committee appointed them as appointed Jesse Jackson and Rev. Sharpton the spokesmen of the African-American community ; )

AMEN! I called both of my senators offices today and very loudly told them she deserved an up or down vote. Besides, less than 30% of FReepers or the general public are against her nomination. Typical minority teeth gnashing.
