MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti)-A battle is being waged in various districts of the North Caucasus city of Nalchik, a source in the local department of the Emergency Situations Ministry said Thursday.
"There are gangs all over the city, and battles are going on," the source said. "The militants are concentrated in different places."

NALCHIK, Russia (AP) -- Police and security forces on Thursday battled gunmen in the capital of the southern Russian region of Kabardino-Balkariya, including in a school near a police station.
A teacher from the school, who gave only his first name, Spartak, said the students had been evacuated. Black smoke billowed from the school as panic-stricken parents searched for their children in the schoolyard.
At least three alleged militants were killed, a duty officer at the southern Russian district office of the Interior Ministry said. He said that the fighting began after police in Nalchik received an anonymous telephoned tip that a group of about 10 armed militants had entered the city, and police and security forces launched a special operation to capture them.
A policeman was wounded in the fighting, said Marina Kyasova, a spokesman for the Kabardino-Balkariya regional office of the ministry.
Intense shooting from automatic rifles and grenade-launchers could be heard in the center of the city. The North Caucasus department on fighting terrorism and city police unit No. 2 are located behind School No. 5.
The Interfax news agency reported that gunmen had launched simultaneous attacks on the regional headquarters of the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service, as well as a number of other buildings.
Citing an unidentified source in law enforcement, Interfax said that the battle was sparked by the detention of a group of adherents to the radical Wahhabi strain of Islam, and that their fellow believers were trying to free them.
It said that federal forces had surrounded Nalchik.
Kabardino-Balkariya, along with other southern Russian regions, has seen a rise in Islamic extremist movements and violence targeting police, soldiers and other law enforcement officials in recent years linked to the decade-old guerrilla conflict in the breakaway republic of Chechnya.
In December, gunmen raided the regional branch of the federal Drug Control Agency in Nalchik, killing four employees, looting an arsenal and setting the office ablaze.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered security forces to deal more severely with suspected Islamic militants in the south. Law-enforcement agencies have launched a series of sweeps targeting suspected extremists outside Chechnya.

The witness said he had seen several children running out of school number five in Nalchik and one of the children, a girl around seven years old, said that gunmen were inside the school and that gunfire had occurred there.
Central Nalchik was sealed off and police cars equipped with loudspeakers circulated in the area broadcasting messages to local residents to evacuate the quarter.
The school was situated behind a police headquarters building and smoke hung over parts of the city.
Russian news agency Interfax, quoting police sources, said clashes had occurred in several parts of the city.

A CHINESE man shot and injured 16 young schoolchildren as they were doing their morning exercises, Xinhua news agency said today.
It was the latest in a wave of school attacks to shock the country in recent years.The middle-aged man opened fire with several home-made guns at the children at the Niutoushan Primary School in impoverished eastern Anhui province yesterday morning, Xinhua said.
Seven of the 16 wounded were in serious condition in hospital in the neighbouring province of Zhejiang.
One man working near the school tried to stop the shooting but was knocked down by the gunman as he made his escape, Xinhua said.
There have been a series of attacks on schools and schoolchildren around China, some by people who have lost their jobs or felt left out of the recent economic boom.
A carpenter broke into a school in southern China in April and cut off part of a boy's ear with a kitchen knife and half a girl's middle finger.
Two children and a teacher were killed last year in the Chinese capital Beijing in two separate kindergarten attacks.
A Chinese bus driver stabbed and wounded 25 primary school children in the eastern province of Shandong in September 2004. The same month, a man wielding a knife and homemade bombs injured 28 children in the eastern city of Suzhou.

NALCHIK. Oct 13 (Interfax) - Up to ten guerrillas have been killed in armed clashes with federal security forces in Nalchik on Thursday, Kabardino-Balkarian presidential chief of staff Oleg Shandirov told Interfax.
"About ten guerrillas have been killed. There are also casualties among the law enforcement agencies, but I will not say their number," Shandirov said.
