Violence Policy Center Urges Washington Redskins to Withdraw From Shooting Fundraiser With National Rifle Association as NRA Lobbies on Capitol Hill to Overturn D.C.'s Gun Laws
Redskins/NRA Event Announced Same Month That NRA's Magazine Attacks D.C. Mayor Williams and Police Chief Ramsey WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Violence Policy Center, a Washington, D.C.-based national non-profit organization working to reduce gun death and injury, today sent Washington Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder a letter urging him to "end all participation" by the Washington Redskins in a planned shooting event with the National Rifle Association on October 25, 2005, to benefit the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation (the text of the letter is below and is available at http://www.vpc.org/vpcletter.pdf). The letter notes that the National Rifle Association is currently lobbying Congress to overturn Washington, D.C.'s gun laws. The bills to repeal the District of Columbia's gun laws promoted by the NRA would: legalize handguns as well as semiautomatic assault weapons and 50 caliber sniper rifles; allow any person to carry, openly or concealed, loaded handguns and other concealable firearms in houses, places of business, or other land "possessed by that person"; and, severely weaken the District's ban on armor-piercing handgun ammunition. Citing the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation's dedication to the "health and wellness" of youth, and the price exacted on D.C. children and teens by gun violence, the letter urges the Redskins and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation to end all participation in this event, stating, "The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation's involvement with an organization whose mission is to repeal Washington D.C.'s gun laws cannot be reconciled with the mission of the foundation." The NRA-backed legislation is vigorously opposed by Mayor Anthony Williams, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Charles Ramsey, and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and also stands, according to the letter, "as an outrageous attack by an outside special interest group on the home rule rights of D.C. residents." The September 19, 2005, announcement by the Redskins of the NRA shooting event (see http://www.redskins.com/community/communitynews.jsp?id=494) comes the same month that the cover of the NRA's America's 1st Freedom magazine features "Washington's Newest Monument," an imagined "monument" consisting of a giant tombstone marked "Washington, D.C., America's Murder Capital." The tombstone is covered with skulls and faces of the dead. Inside, a two-page photograph of Mayor Anthony Williams holding up his hands while making a point has the headline and caption, "D.C. to Criminals: We Surrender! The mayor of Washington, D.C., the Murder Capital of the U.S. for 14 of the last 15 years, strikes a telling pose as he defends D.C.'s absurd gun laws." The article then goes on to attack Mayor Williams and Chief Ramsey (see http://www.vpc.org/nradcarticle.pdf for a copy of the article). VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann states, "We hope that after reviewing the facts surrounding the National Rifle Association's attempts to undermine public safety in Washington, D.C., Mr. Snyder will do what is best for the Redskins and their fans in the District of Columbia by ending all participation by the team and its foundation in this event."

you ain't wrong.
the VPC excels in smoke and mirrors.
look at their BS regarding guns and kids.
note the total lack of raw data or explanation of sampling methodology.
You'd get the impression that kids are dying left and right in the US, going by their "Prime fact: the US death rate for kids <14 is TWELVE TIMES that of..."
blah blah blah.
but, if you actually look up the REAL data, you find:

Children Killed by Guns
How many children are killed by guns is a complicated question. The answer depends on a number of factors, including age range, and whether homicide, suicide, and/or unintentional-injuries are included in the figure. If the age range is 0-19 years, and homicide, suicide, and unintentional injuries are included, then the total firearms-related deaths for 1999 is 3,385 . This is equivalent to about 9 deaths per day, a figure commonly used by journalists. The 3,385 firearms-related deaths for age group 0-19 breaks down to 214 unintentional, 1,078 suicides, 1,990 homicides, 83 for which the intent could not be determined, and 20 due to legal intervention. Viewed by age group, 73 of the total firearms-related deaths were of children under 5 years old, 416 were children 5-14 years old, and 2,896 were 15-19 years old. See page 127 of the 2002 edition of Injury Facts ®.
So: including ALL causes (deliberate homicide, suicide, and misadventure), in 1999 we had a whopping total of 492 children <15 years old die by gunfire.
then, we have the following:

funny... they don't seem too hot to ban bicycles and swimming pools, do they?
I'd like him get Jon Janson to do it. He's a big time hunter (and he's healthy this year, yay!).
Yes, but Jansen broke BOTH his thumbs. He's still playing, though.
These people are dangerous. If you ever meet one, put your hand on the grip of your firearm and back out of the room slowly. Inform local law enforcement that there is a crazy person on the loose and let them handle it. If the lunatic attempts to leave the scene, follow them at a safe distance and keep the 9-11 operator apprised of thier movements.
This is the first I heard of this. Go Redskins!
again: you ain't wrong. you can SEE their mania, often enough.
There are very few gun owners who are members of the NRA or any other group for that matter.
The NRA calls them "Freedom Freeloaders".
Crew members who said they were reportedly confronted with Minnesota Vikings players having a wild sex party with women last week on two charter boats cruising Lake Minnetonka met today with Hennepin County Sheriff's detectives who are investigating allegations of prostitution and lewd behavior.
What an honor! I'm impressed. ;)
Sue the SOB's !
I think one of the saddest things is that with somewhere between 69-80 million gun owners and millions of conservatives that the NRA just has 4 million members. You can join for 35 dollars a year. Get off the couch and call them or get on the net and JOIN NOW PLEASE.
Nah, I love the irony.
Works for me!
Humblegunner is gonna have em all printed on duct tape so's we can fix what's wrong......:o)
The Skins should tell Josh Suckerman, I mean Sugarmann to perform an unatural act on himself.
Irony my ass... Tom is my new write-in candidate.
LOL!!
Considering the lame candidates running, I wouldn't be surprised if you did a lot better than you think you might. You could probably even safely have a family scandal or two in your history and it wouldn't matter compared to Perry, Streyhorn, and Kinky.
Your are correct....we have formed a new party (the backyard party) and are taking political contributions in the form of "ideas" vs cash (maybe a free beer or two) as all them personal and corporate checks from New Mexico keep bouncing....an it keeps us from having to hire PAC money accountants and lawyers etc etc ......
Aside who's his competition ?.......Kinky Friedman ?
Theres a new bumper sticker / slogan for Eaker right there !
Eaker for Governor....Kinkier than Kinky !
