The long-standing relationship between high court nominee Harriet Miers and Texas jurist Nathan Hecht entrances and puzzles their friends.

HOUSTON He was a country boy who grew up on a wheat farm, she a city girl who played on her high school tennis team.
The lives of Nathan Hecht and Harriet E. Miers began to intertwine in the early 1970s, shortly after they finished law school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Soon, they were rising stars at the same law firm, and their lives seemed to be converging in every way. They were earnest, ambitious and increasingly affectionate with one another. Friends thought they would get married.
Instead, for 30 years, Hecht and Miers President Bush's Supreme Court nominee have nurtured a kinship that has entranced and confounded their closest friends. They are traditional conservatives content in a modern, nontraditional relationship, one that leaves plenty of time for their true love, their work, to take center stage.
Romantic at times, the relationship has played an important role in their ascent to power she as White House counsel, he as a justice of the Texas Supreme Court, where he has served for 15 years.
"I think they thought seriously about getting married," said Dallas commercial litigation attorney Brady Sparks, who lived across the hall from Hecht in law school and has been friends with Hecht and Miers ever since. "They both decided that it just wasn't in the cards for the agenda they both wanted, and that was to do about three lifetimes worth of work in one lifetime." -snip-

This blows the assertions from her detractors that she's a lesbo.
why is the LATimes making this anybody's business?
I thought this was a sweet story.
Given the case of Souter, we certainly DO need to ask.
The "Souter" problem, stripped to its essence, is that Souter is GAY. Gay people living in the closet ( a la Souter as a 'confirmed bachelor") have secret lives, secret beliefs. In the context of giving someone a job-for-life of ultimate power, the chance thet someone's closeted views will become their public views, a la Souter, represent a risk that we shouldn't be asked to take again.
Oh good grief...
The MSM is attempting to make inroads in Harlequin's readership?
::sigh:: Whatever thoughts of the nomination, I'd rather this type of article never be penned. It has a taint to it that is not respectful personally to the individuals.
Good thing Baird didn't say this "unconventional relationship" was very "French."
Since some people have questioned her sexuality this is a good rebuttal
I have for the most part, given up reading these numerous articles about Meirs, but every once in a while one like this comes along, which really has nothing to do with whether she is qualified for the job or not, and shows just how tabloid like the media has become, and deserves a stupid comment from me.
Why is it these same tabloids can't do the same for someoe like, say, John F'n Kerry, or Hillary 'thunder thiegh's' Clinton,or Barbra big mouth Boxer etc. digging into every minutr detail of their less than honerable lives? It's a sad statement of just how biased crappy tabloids like the LA times are, which really prints nothing newsworthy unless you consider what Holly-weirdo actors have to say, or who is winning the shortest and most numerous number of marriages race, the sleazyest dress, Most DUI's, or dumbest statment of the year Tony award, or what ever they are calling these events coke parties now.
I'm with you. This kind of crap is why so many people are reluctant to run for high public office, they don't want to see the most intimate details of their personal lives splashed across the pages of newspapers for the perusal of millions of strangers.
I think she's entirely qualified. I will watch the hearings with keen interest.
Show me proof.
Don't you mean poof?
I agree. In fact she seems more qualified than most in my opinion. But then, I'm more impressed by people who are more human, who's lifetime achievments show the person to be well balanced and relatively sane.
Well, do you remember this story:
Justice Souter assaulted during jog

Supreme Court Justice David Souter suffered minor injuries in the attack, a spokeswoman said.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter was assaulted by two men Friday night and taken to a hospital with minor injuries, a court spokeswoman said.
The incident occurred while he was jogging about 9 p.m. Friday, said Kathy Arberg, a court spokeswoman.
Law enforcement sources told CNN the incident occurred near the Potomac River waterfront in southwest Washington, not far from Souter's home.
Arberg said that the motive was not robbery, but law enforcement sources said it appeared to be a random attack.
Arberg said Supreme Court police escorted the justice to Washington Hospital Center. He was examined and released about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
He suffered "minor injuries" and is "feeling fine," Arberg said.
She could not characterize the nature or motivation for the attack, and said only that young men were involved.
Souter is an avid jogger.
Thank you. We'll watch the hearings and see how she answers and handles herself.
#16 is your proof that Souter is queer?
I suppose the level of proof you require is that I state that he personally propositioned me! Sorry -- I'm not your guy on that one.
I lived in D.C. for 4 years, you don't have to tell me what it's like.
You've offered no proof that Souter is a queer other than your own statement that he is.
