BTW I did not say that the media pundits have more credibility than POTUS. I simply asked who were the members of the conservative community who are enthused by this nomination.
States rights means just that. Be very careful when you vote or when you decide to sit out an election.
Its the chapter in my book designed to make me feel bad because Im termed Middle Class. Sociology is a study of haves and have nots, and how it is the fault of the haves that that the have nots have not. Make any sense?
Well...from Catholic to EC and Demo to Pubbie are two pretty significant life changes; not exactly like going to K-Mart instead Wal-Mart for shelving for the garage. This does not speak for intellectual consistency--I believe that it was a fair comment from Wallace.
It was Ken Starr, I believe.
He had no preparation of the questions, no one worked with him? He had no plan, no goals set before hand for his appearance? If you do not understand that these hearings are a performance and you rehearse for a performance and that in term is being SCRIPTED
Miers will not answer any questions.
That is the mantra, and I agree that is what has pissed the Miers and Bush haters off, but I think it's wrong, on the substance.
First, and easiest to address, is your last point. "Pubbies" don't have the votes to stop a fillibuster and, if you think about it a moment, they don't have the votes for a straight majority for someone who is openly against Roe v Wade. There are enough RINOs who have already declared against any such nominee, including the Chairman of Judiciary, that no such candidate could get through committee, let alone confirmed.
As to the "known vs unknown" question, remember that O'Connor, Kennedy and Souter were all touted as reliable conservative nominees based on extensive records on state or federal appelate courts and Clarence Thomas was criticized as someone with no record who was only appointed because he was a White House insider (a "crony") and met the "black seat" quota.
I question the value of the qualifications being cited as being worth anything.
All of these people are to be dismissed now because of their lack of intellectual consistency.
I might find reasons to disgree wtih all of them, but their personal decision to choose a religion is not one of them.
This is a despicable comment by Wallace.
The fact that even when she was a Democrat she was always identifed as a "conservative Democrat" should. She's always been a conservative. Sounds pretty consistant to me. As for her change of religious views, I split with the RCC for having turned into a political activist group and have no opinion on a personal decision which she has every right to make.
I am afraid that you are incorrect. See my post #285 on this thread (IIRC).
Like minds, great post.
It makes not one bit of difference here. In San diego, the court decided (On the Mt. soledad issue) that we needed to win on the ballot, by a two thirds majority. We had a 75% majority win in that vote to save the Cross. This judge has deemed the election illegal and reversed the original judge. Please don't tell me to get out and vote. Don't tell me to be careful how I vote. I did vote and 3/4 of the voters agreed with me. One judge, however, did not!
re: your point # 4....I'm almost certain Janice R. Brown didn't want to go through this again. At least not now.
Rush met her at the NR gala and she thanked him for understanding how stressful these hearings are for true conservatives.
I'm still waiting for the Senate hearings, but I have to admit I'm leaning more towards supporting Harriet Miers than before. The various posts and links here today, for one, the tone of opposition, for a second, and the people who are against her, for a third.
Miers is in pretty good company for her detractors.
Bush keeps coming out smelling like a rose compared to his opponents, and the probability of it happening again is greater than the opposite.
Maybe he is smart enough to know that going against the populist view shared by talking heads, pundits and scholars, would be in his best interest.
Down the road it might matter whether he behaved like an hysterical snob or not.
His testimony was done without notes, but was not memorized, like an actor performing his lines.
Your contempt for all things political has been duly noted. I imagine you are not a very happy person, and I am sorry for that.
Just another way of saying "the Democrat party."
That is the most excellent analysis of Bill Kristol that I've ever read; it makes every bit of sense. I've always been this-way-and-that-way about him, I guess because his commentaries are, on their face, all over the place. I will have a difficult time to think of him in a positive light from now on. Thank you!!
I certainly don't believe he's perfect, but he's certainly not capable of their brand of evil. He was raised SO much better than that, and his born-again walk with God means a lot to him.
