ISLAMABAD, Oct. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- A strong earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked major Pakistani cities of Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar on Saturday morning, according to local TV reports.
The quake shook buildings in Islamabad, capital of Pakistan, for about a minute at around 8:50 a.m. local time.
It also shook northern India and part of Afghanistan as Xinhua reporters in New Delhi and Kabul said both the capitals felt the shakings of the quake.
The India Meteorological Department said the earthquake's epicenter was in Pakistan. In India, the first tremor was felt at 9:25 a.m. Saturday in India-controlled Kashmir, north India's Uttaranchal, Punjab, Rajasthan, west India's Gujarat and the capital city Delhi.
Strong quakes have pushed people out of their homes in Srinagarin India-controlled Kashmir, according to NDTV reports.
High rise buildings were left particularly shaken by the tremor lasting for about minutes in Delhi. Enditem

I can picture Osama, stumbling, falling down a hillside, being spit out of a mountain...
Sorry it's a guestimate from an internet acquaintance (a journalist) who lives in Pakistan. He thinks the damage north of Islamabad will be very serious.
There is a fair sized city there named Muzaffarabad.
I wonder if OBL did die in a landslide or cave-in, would we ever know it?
Pakistan, India Are Hit by 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake (Update2)(Bloomberg)
There was a fair sized city. I hope your acquaintance is safe and well.
See Alaska for reference on any quake over 7.0. Magnitude is not linear. If a quake breaks things 400+ mile from epicenter, it is big.
There are millions in the area directly above the quake; Muzaffarabad, Abbotabad, Mansehra, etc. There have been no reports from this area at all.
25,000+ killed seems quite plausible to me.
Let's hope you and I are both badly wrong.
oops!
Could've damaged infrastructure, though. Talk about your chewing gum and bailing wire.

They really didn't need those top two stories. But on a more serious side, the article said that part of the building collapsed. That is something to be thankful for. Even a 19 story building collapsing would have killed quite a few people.
Considering what happened to the Nimitz Freeway in the San Francisco earthquake during the late 1980's, one should be grateful that the building did not topple like the freeway did.
Groan! That is not good...
Reuters - MORE THAN 1,000 MIGHT BE DEAD IN PAKISTANI QUAKE-PRESIDENT'S SPOKESMAN
There are now reports of too many dead for me to have made such a light hearted comment. My sincere apologies...
USGS is showing the depth of the quakes as being 10 kilometers. Swallow quakes are bad on water, but what I heard from folks in California that the deeper quakes can cause horrible damage -- but I really don't know...
Maybe it is a time to open prayer threads for these poor people.
May G-d have mercy on these poor people (and I do mean poor -- alot of poverty in that part of the world).
