Conservatives can trust in Miers - Newt Gingrich (excerpts) --- Ms. Miers' first remarks were reassuring in this regard: "It is the responsibility of every generation to be true to the founders' vision of the proper role of the courts and our society." She promised to "strictly apply the laws and the Constitution." --- she proved to be a very effective leader opposing the American Bar Association's official stance in support of abortion, including active support of taxpayer-funded abortions. --- she is deeply committed to the conservative ideal that the people themselves, not an unelected elite, should be able to decide about deeply held values. --- In addition, Ms. Miers brings an important type of diversity to the bench: diversity of experience. --- And perhaps most important, Mr. Bush has worked closely with Ms. Miers every day since his days as governor. The president knows her and knows what kind of justice she will make.

While you sit and complain about this nominee and try to stop the process you will let OConnor be the deciding vote on partial birth abortion just after Thanksgiving. Spare us your worry on Roe v Wade.

"May," "might," "could possibly."
This is not the stuff that ringing, wholehearted endorsements are made of.

There is plenty of evidence and testimony that Miers will strictly interpret the Constitution, as she has demonstrated by the way she works and what she has stated in her words.
What is your evidence that she won't fulfill the intent of President Bush: "A Justice must be a person of accomplishment and sound legal judgment. A Justice must be a person of fairness and unparalleled integrity. And a Justice must strictly apply the Constitution and laws of the United States, and not legislate from the bench."
Nothing in her record suggests that she is lying about her intent "to strictly apply the laws and the Constitution" and "to be true to the founders' vision", or that The President is incorrect in his evaluation of her Constitutional philosophy. He knows far, far more about her than anybody else does in this respect. It is highly likely he knows far more about her Constitutional philosophy than he knows about any other USSC justice prospects.
Face it: THE MAJOR REASON people are opposing Miers is that they wanted a bloody fight over this USSC justice, and this is simply their temper tantrum.

I heard him on Sean Hannity and he didn't nix Miers, but he didn't sound happy about her either. Mostly, he sounded like he was walking on egg shells, not wanting to do damage. He did say that he would never have chosen her.

She's a stealth candidate to everyone except GW! He knows her very, very, well. Now it is Newt, Sekelo, Robertson, Falwell and Dobson. Sounds like the Fundamentalists are fine with her???

So you can read her mind??? There is one major issue that we have been working for and that is abortion. She is Pro-Life and helped GW push through the Partial Birth Abortion Ban.

Dear Moog
Your snide "an intern or an aide" shows you are totally unfamiliar with the university community. Cute tail is a dime a dozen on campus, especially to those who are stars in the lecture circuit firmament.
One thing Newt does not need to have handed to him as part of "da deal" is an intern. Besides, one could get Aids from an aide (or an intern).
Having said that, I disagree with the Miers appointment and would have chosen Janice Rogers Brown had the call been mine.

The statement was in jest. I would have said the same about Slick Willy. Some of these (not most) statements smack of Bill Clinton. Just because there is a lot of cute tail does not make it right. I know exactly what circumstances you are talking about because I was in them in college and have dealt with them for some 19 years. I just didn't choose to follow the temptation. I'm not casting stones because I have a lot to work on, but we shouldn't make excueses for what really happened.
As for Miers, I don't know enough to make a statement. You may be right.

When Robert Bork (who is strongly opposed to the Miers nomination) was asked if he thought she would be confirmed he replied "Yes, the democrats seem to like her ... which should give President Bush pause." Ditto to any conservative who is inclined to fall for Bush's "Trust me on this ..." rhetoric. Remember the Bush I "Read my lips ... no new taxes" remark. The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.

The "Read my Lips" was from his father!! Please give an example of W going back on his word in the past 5 years. Taxes, War on Terror, Life, anything?? Do not give Miers because you don't know she was not PRO-LIFE or a Constructionist, which she is. Give an example or an apology!

Please give an example of W going back on his word in the past 5 years. Taxes, War on Terror, Life, anything?? That's easy ... he did with the Miers nomination to the SCOTUS. He promised to appoint jurists to the SC (given the opportunity) along the lines of Scalia and Rhenquist. Not some ditsy no name lawyer from Texas ... who no one, except Bush, has a clue about. I live in Ohio and we put Bush over the top in 2004 ... and we get Harriet Miers?
Yeah Bush ... thanks a lot!
