Terror in the heartland?
Washington Times ^ | October 7, 2005 | Editorial

Posted on 10/07/2005 3:13:47 AM PDT by baystaterebel

Not more than 100 yards from the Oklahoma-Kansas State football game on Saturday, OU student Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, blew himself up in what was initially believed to be a simple suicide. While his decision to kill himself seemed to match a personality friends and family describe as detached and strange, disturbing facts are beginning to emerge suggesting that Mr. Hinrichs had more sinister designs, like perhaps taking a few of the 84,000 nearby fans with him. Despite the absence of a suicide note, there is little doubt the troubled student intended to kill himself. His bizarre method, however, is more reminiscent of suicide bombers than suicidal students. For instance, at least one of the bomb components he used -- triacetone triperoxide -- was the same homemade substance used by Richard Reid, the so-called Shoe Bomber. The stuff is highly unstable. It can detonate if merely dropped, and experts say it can even explode spontaneously. The obvious questions arise: Why would someone choose to kill himself with this stuff, nicknamed the "Mother of Satan" by Islamists, if suicide were his sole purpose? Did Mr. Hinrichs intend for the bombs to go off when they did, so close to a packed stadium? Also, why carry it out as if in imitation of a suicide bomber? Suicidal people of Mr. Hinrichs' age, it is true, have a tendency for the dramatic, and perhaps that was Mr. Hinrichs' only purpose here -- to go out in such a way as to be remembered. But that still leaves open the question as to how he learned to make bombs in the first place.

These guys both spent time in Norman Oklahoma, among Islamists. Note the almost-identical "Islamic-look"...tight, curly hair, beard, no mustache.

Hinrichs and Nick Berg

BUMP to what should be the story of the year, and would have been, had the plot succeeded.

I actually heard the Boomer Sooner mentioned on Tucker Carlsons show last night. It was during an interview with a counter terrorism expert no less.

WOW - 6 days later the Washington Post decides to write a story on this?

Washingtom Times -- and it's an editorial piece, not a hard news story. Odd.

To me, the biggest mystery is why big MSM (networks and big city leftist rags) isn't covering this story and connecting the readily available dots.

Same pattern for the DC snipers and other acts of domestic terrorism. I think in this case, the story is muted because it isn't useful to paint the administration as ineffective. When there is a bigger attack that can't be ignored as terrorism, the fangs will come out.

I think if the events of 9/11 involved only 1 plane, the public would be told it was a mechanical malfunction or whatever suits - anything but a successful attack.

>an editorial piece, not a hard news story.

And if you read it critically, a very timid and tentative editorial at that...

On the whole, it sounds as if the car had been packed and ready to go...

Other than bomb materials and atlas? What?

Anyone?

I think Boron's statement is confirmation the guy converted to Islam

I rather believe the statements by those who actually knew Joel - his family, friends and fraternity brothers - is an indication that he did NOT.

I do, however find it interesting that Boren straight up labeled him as a 'suicide bomber'. That's a rather bizarre phrase to use so early with quite specific connotations.

A major FBI investigation has been in progress for several days.

Well, let's see. Greta will be talking about this tonight, right?

She might, they found the missing Virginia student, dead of course.

It was yesterday and it discussed the attempted purchase of ammonium nitrate at the feed store; not much new for us following the story.

"She might, they found the missing Virginia student, dead of course."

They also just found the mother of the little 4 year old girl who was dumped in the middle of (?) Brain fart again at 2:00 in the morning.

They found her body in a landfill and have the boyfriend in custody.

Suicide doesn't take a "large cache of explosive material".

You're right. All it takes is one bullet.

"WOW - 6 days later the Washington Post decides to write a story on this???"

I'm sure it's been pointed out by now that this was the Washington Times. The Washington Post probably has a writer doing a story debunking the idea that this had anything to do with Islam. Watch for it. "Bombers Muslim Ties Doubted".

Alas,

I still have more questions than information. For example, on what the Office of Homeland Security said was thin information, the New York Subway are cleared and 39,000 police officers mobilized. The Oklahomans are left in the dark, despite the fact that there seems to be an abundance of terrorist acitivity eminating directly from the mosque Mr.Hinrich was seen in attendance. Mousauii, Oklahoma City Bombing of the Murrah Building, the connection to 'third bomber'.

Why are New Yorkers given information with which to make informed decisions and the heartland were given lies by Boren?

Nope. It's been pointed out that Hinrichs didn't blow up a pretty blonde college student.
