After a few days of arguing over the Miers nomination for the Supreme Court I am rather sick of it. I have been arguing for her even though I know little about her. I think she is a fine individual and probably a good Christian , and I think her qualifications are just fine. After all 35 of 55 Founding Fathers were lawyers, does that mean the other 20 werent qualified? But I digress to write this because I am moving into the No category.
I decided this not because I dont like her, I personally feel that she would make a fine Justice, but her simple nomination has torn the base apart. I think it would do us and the RNC good if we all united against her, because as it stands right now we are becoming laughing stocks to the otherside, and if there is one thing I hate ,and thats to be laughed at by commies. We all need to stop the name calling, the troll insults and the Bush-bot insults and well all of them, and yes I am guilty of it too. I wont be a vociferous voice against her, you will probably still hear me defend her and the President, like I have been doing.
I urge a consensus from the base to emerge over this. The poll on FR is showing the Yes crowd with 30.3% the nos with 24.4% and the need more info at 41.8%(the hillarys dont count), and this is the member poll results.I dont think it would be to unfair to reason that if you were to poll the base outside of FR the results would be the same, and that is dangerous for any party. Sure it shows that we arent a lockstep party, or a lockstep ideology, with the powers that be. But if a movement is to survive it has to have a secure foundation, and right now I see the foundation rumbling as if to fracture.
What's all the fuss? The qualifications for Supreme Court Justice should not be that unobtainable for the vast majority of U.S. citizens. All that matters is that you have a clear mind and a good understanding of the U.S. Constitution.
So this Harriet Miers should fit the bill just fine. So she's 60 years old. What's the big deal? She's a young 60 years old. She's got 20 years in the tank, easy. She probably goes to bed at night just like any other woman. She probably dreams and she probably dreams about what it would be like to be in an airplane that is crashing. Then she wakes up and all is well again.
I think there is to much ado about Harriet Miers.
How nice of you, willing to let the President of the United States, you know -- the one representing OUR party -- get a black eye because you're weak-kneed.
Hopefully Jim will run that survey shortly after or even during the hearings. We will have a much better handle on things.
Right now, I figure that if I can't say something nice, I shouldn't say anything at all.
You should have been here the day Bush picked Cheney for his VP; it was a LOT worse -- and the things that were said about Cheney were ASTOUNDING.
People that post vanities should be charged $50 each time.
I just wanted the fight, to drive more nails in the libs coffin. I have been waging this war since Goldwater, and I want it finished. We had a chance to do that, but the President choose to weasle out. I hope he had an ulterior motive that is temporarily lost to us vartlets. If not, and Ms. Miers is confirmed and she turns into a Souder, I am basically screwed, for she will be there until I am gone....I will never know what it is like to live under a SOCTUS that does not make us live by its law. Worse, you younger people will have to live with it.
I wanted the fight....not tomorrow, not next week, but now. Sigh...
"Why not pick someone who has an established record and will get 51 votes?"
What makes you think you'd get 51 votes?
The division over Miers is nothing compared to what happened when Terri Schiavo was starving to death!
Haven't you been saying that for years?
That's a great plan. Throw everything out the window. Yeah, that's the ticket.
I think the conservative base can handle disagreement.
What it cannot tolerate is the character assasinations and name calling folks on both aisles have engaged in.
And, you are correct to point out the FR poll.
Members are divided. The base is divided. Anyone dismissing that division as being a small minority is ignoring the very real division here, why I don't know. That division does not disappear by pretending it doesn't exist.
I'm not going to demand anyone support or favor Miers. But the namecalling should cease. Dismissal of legitimate opinion should cease. It is out of line and isn't swaying anyone to a certain position.
You weren't here during the 200o primaries, I see. I almost got banned during that fracas!!
I think everyone should wait until Ms. Miers testifies. We can make our decisions then.
Meanwhile, I would like for people to think about how many votes for a published, conservative, originalist candidate there are. I count 7 that we can't depend upon. Going forward with Owens or Brown, w might end up with a losing vote. I wouldn't like that.
You did a very good job in cautioning people to wait before they passed judgement..it's a shame that you are giving up.
Myself, I will support her unless her testimony shows her to be incompetent.
I'm getting the impression that you all want the party to be split.
Telling.
I'm not saying there isn't a split, but the FR poll numbers make it appear worse than it is.
No, actually... I've only just said it now.
I don't want that. I'm just getting frustrated at the just plain meanness of the debate lately. It's a downer.
I'll get over it. :-)
huh? everybody was getting along fine. then you came in with the insults. And you are accusing me of wanting the party split?
I guess I can interpret that to mean everybody was agreeing with you?
What are you talking about? I have never suggested that I was even among the 1000th tier of possible candidates.
I am certain I am not perfect, but I am trying.
It would be helpful if the pudits would set an example.
All policy debates happen only on the right because the laft has no ideas to discuss. This debate is a tough one but no tougher than border issues or creation vs. evolution. Don't just wimp out when the debate gets heated - we don't and Bush won't.
