Federal prosecutors have accepted an offer from presidential adviser Karl Rove to give 11th-hour testimony in the case of a CIA officer's leaked identity but have warned they cannot guarantee he won't be indicted, according to people directly familiar with the investigation.
The persons, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of grand jury secrecy, said Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has not made any decision yet on whether to file criminal charges against the longtime confidant of President Bush or others.
The U.S. attorney's manual requires prosecutors not to bring witnesses before a grand jury if there is a possibility of future criminal charges unless they are notified in advance that their grand jury testimony can be used against them in a later indictment.
Rove has already made at least three grand jury appearances and his return at this late stage in the investigation is unusual.
The prosecutor did not give Rove similar warnings before his earlier grand jury appearances.
Where is your quote from, AP?
Based on what I just saw on Brit Humme's Special Report, it sounds like Robert Novak's testimony may have been more detailed about Rove mentioning Plame by name. This whole ordeal could be over a "white lie" or an honest memory malfunction. Karl Rove could have gone before the Grand Jury and stated that he didn't even know Plame's name and never mentioned her by name to any reporter, when in fact, he did.
If this is only one piece of this curious puzzle, it is indeed a shame because the intent of the charge (trying to "out" an undercover agent) is still laughable. But if Rove did lie to the Special Prosecutor, about ANYTHING, he's doomed.
And like oceanview says: A perjury charge is actually worse politically then the "plame name" charge. the sheeple understand the word "perjury". they don't understand releasing the name of someone - its no big deal to the average american to release the name of someone who is on the cover of vanity fair.
If Rove is indicted, the media will pick and chose and will unfairly paint and gleefuly destroy this ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION. The thought sickens me, but it is a reality. Before we know it, Bush will be up on impeachment charges. If Rove is indeed indicted, we better get ready for the biggest political war known to this country. Republicans have already proven they have no spine to fight and will tuck tail and run from Bush trying to save their own sorry hides. We need to pray very hard for our President and his administration.
Right now I'm afraid, very afraid.
No. As this article states, Rove offered more testimony in July. A blogger reports (take with a grain of salt but he's being borne out and it makes more sense than the idea Libby and Rove violated any laws) that Rove gave a written proffer back then of his proposed testimony and it involves Matt Cooper.
Well, at post #230 someone linked to the New York Times story and surprise surprise surprise, they say it is indeed about Cooper.
Mr. Luskin has said he had offered for Mr. Rove to return to the grand jury if needed to clarify any questions that were raised by the testimony in July by Matthew Cooper, a reporter for Time magazine, who was questioned about a conversation that he with Mr. Rove regarding Mr. Wilson's trip in July 2003.
Miller, Cooper....the MSM knew about Plame/Wilson well before anyone in the Admin.
All Fitzy baby needs now is a crime. "Outing" a desk jockey at the CIA is not a crime. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
You are correct.
I heard he offered to testify again after Matt Cooper did. The offer was made in July. Does that constitute 11th hour or do they want to clarify something?Perhaps they'll turn the case over to Ronnie Earle, he'd know what to do. < sarcasm on >
I'd like to see him indict Wilson and Plame for conspiracy.
Swirling, how appropriate.
Sounds like page 17 newz.{:>)
I think FRee Republic would be wise to cut you loose, troll.
Thank you for that health update! (sarcasm)
Try to relax. Take a deep breath. Get away from the news. Walk outside. Write a song. Chop some wood. Unlike the 9/11 attacks, this isn't worth getting terribly stressed over. That is, unless you are a target of the investigation. ;)
Rule number 1. This is an AP story and it will be slanted in the worst way for the president. Same with the rest of the MSM. I have read through the posts and a couple have some good nuggets of information. I do think Karl Rove and the Presidents team will be OK. Like was said above relax and wait for the rest of the story. Remember what was posted about Tom Delay and how that is turning out.
they did more then "know" - they were talking to the people that set it up, and were used to setup Rove and Libby.
But we have to separate our debate on the facts, from what's going to happen with this GJ. I'm just hoping the guy closes up and does nothing - I lost hope a long time ago that he was going to get the real story behind Wilson.
Novak's testimony may have been more detailed about Rove mentioning Plame by name
If this were true then Rove would be a target. If there was a crime. The prosecutor would not bring a target into the Grand Jury room. Doesn't happen.
The target would not have a lawyer.
The prosecutor could see the case thrown out.
Novak said from the beginning that the press was looking in the wrong place for the source of his info.
And there was a conspiracy
"When contacted, anonymous sources couldn't guarantee that monkeys would not fly out of Harry Reid's a$$ come Saturday morning."
