Lott: 'Not comfortable' with Miers' nomination Miss. Senator says he'll need more information before supporting nominee MSNBC Updated: 11:34 a.m. ET Oct. 5, 2005
Add Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss.) to the list of Republicans not entirely pleased with President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.
Lott, appearing on MSNBC-TV on Wednesday morning, told anchor Randy Meier that wants more information about Miers.
"I need to know a lot more about her, her experience and her level of competence and what is her philosophy. I really don't know this lady and I do think I owe it to my constituents and to my own conscience to do due diligence and find out actually who this person is," he said.
His first impression, however, was not a positive one.
"I don't just automatically salute or take a deep bow anytime a nominee is sent up," he said. "I have to find out who these people are, and right now, I'm not satisfied with what I know. I'm not comfortable with the nomination, so we'll just have to work through the process in due time."

So it begins.
I was wondering when the first republican would start to question this.
I think Lott still bears bitterness and resentment for having been pushed out as Majority Leader, and thus might be relatively quick to attack a Bush nominee.
Even so, I find his opposition notable.
Ping
If Trent Lott doesn't like her, does that mean she's too conservative?
Brownback was indicating some reservations yesterday.
Fair enough...Brownbeck has said something similar...
She's no Strom Thurmond, that's for sure.
The question now is if others will join him and if so who.
I don't think what Lott said could be called "opposition."
He said he needed to know more, and until he did, he wasn't "comfortable"...I think "opposition" is a strong word considering the sentiments he expressed.
Trent Lott was a poor Majority Leader. When the Katrina disaster aid package is passed and signed, Lott should announce his retirement and let Chip Pickering succeed him.
Great, the pubs will do the heavy lifting for the 'rats on this one.
Lott was a "stealth" member of the GANG of 14....he just works behind the scenes to try to stick it to Bush, so this doesn't surprise me at all...
I would have been SHOCKED if he had come out with a good opinion, actually.
I give this guy credit. He wants to know more, as do we all. Nothing wrong or negative about that. Its a far cry from many here on FR who are balanced on the edge of the bridge, teetering..
Lott should be zotted!! No dissent is allowed!
I know, cheap shot, but I feel Lott is a stuff-suit blowdry who squandered his past role.
LOL. Hard to know what is driving Lott. I'm sure if he were still Leader he'd be supporting her. Now that he's on the outside, I think he's much more apt to take potshots at the administration.
Even so, he wouldn't have dared say this if he were convinced Miers was a top-notch conservative.
Just another one of many poster boy's for "TERM LIMITS"....
Wow - this is turning into a great day for Harriet Miers. Trent Lott brings me great comfort that this might very well be a good choice.
