President Bush sought to calm conservatives over his latest Supreme Court pick in a rare Rose Garden press conference yesterday, but some Republicans on Capitol Hill remain unconvinced.
Responding to a question from The Washington Times, the president said he hopes conservatives who wanted him to pick someone more demonstrably conservative than White House Counsel Harriet Miers understand that "she will not legislate from the bench."
"I know her; I know her heart; I know what she believes -- remember, she was part of the search committee that helped pick Roberts," he said. "She knows exactly the kind of judge I'm looking for. And I know exactly the kind of judge she'll be."
But in a response not likely to please conservatives or liberals, Mr. Bush yesterday said he does not recall discussing abortion with Miss Miers in the decade that he has known her, and he declined to say whether the court should overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that made abortion a constitutional right.

I'm convinced after this week that Bush will never select someone of that quality. His views on the Constitution are quite different than most freepers unfortunately.
I am convinced of that as well.
I believe some one has convinced the president that appointing a justice that would repeal Roe would be catastrophic for the conservative cause in the long run. Believe it or not, there are a lot of republicans out there that fear Roe being over turned will hurt the republicans like gun control has hurt the Dems.
[[We already have a leftist theocracy..what's wrong with balancing things out?]]
I assume, maybe wrongly, that this is tongue in cheek. The leftist secular agenda is 'freedom FROM religion', a theocracy requires religion, the left has none and seeks its absence, along the lines of socialist/communist governments.
Sure.....they have their figurative religions..elitism, intellectualism, defeatism and a whole list of isms...it's all in your perspective. I would venture to guess those socialist/communists also have allies of other faiths with a few good Alahs in their names as well.
The whole point is the founders created this government to have a balance or it will not survive as we know it.
You can sit back and let the country we love be taken over by the religions of the "isms" and the Alahs or you can get over the brainwashing and the quilt the left has attempted to put us Christians through and accept that a few good Christians in the government does not a total Theocracy make. Historically it's been known as a country called America.
We can't all be Thomas Jeffersons.

Aren't you engaging in elitism and intellectualism in decrying Meirs' record ? I made mo assertion that there are no religions that toe the left wing line, only that the left wing line is governed by atheism, which is no religion at all.
Being a political realist does not mean one is brainwashed, brainwashing is the realm of ideologues. The monoliths of the left are slowly being torn down, the 'old media', academia and the judicial system. I have no aversion to 'good Christians' being in government, just don't dictate to me how I must believe or label me as something less because I am not a religious zealot.
I do believe this is a judeo-christian country founded upon those beliefs. I believe in God in the pledge, I do not believe in the separation of church and state as the left defines it, I do believe the Christian faith is the majority faith in this country, and as such, should have some influence, as long as it does not discriminate. I believe taking religion out of Christmas is wrong. The 'Establishment Clause' ONLY refers to the establishment of a singular religion as a national religion (i.e. the Church of England), not to a broad spectrum of faith, Christian, etc.
I think Bush, even with his mistakes, is on the right track, one only has to look at the big picture.
Stealth candidate helps to keep his powder dry and/or flush out the Dims' strategery
Currently, lower level Fed courts may be crucial for existing caseload
His record of judicial appointments is very strong so far
Don't play poker with this man
The real battles will come later (in time for the 2006 elections)
Why not? Dick Cheney did...
You may be right but the sooner we overturn Roe, the more babies will be saved.
