Sources Identify TATP As Component Of Bomb TATP Same Component Used By Infamous Shoe Bomber
POSTED: 9:56 pm CDT October 4, 2005 UPDATED: 10:11 pm CDT October 4, 2005
NORMAN, Okla. -- Sources confirmed Tuesday night that at least one of the components in the bomb used by Joel Henry Hinrichs III Saturday night was a product called TATP.
Technically, TATP is triacetone triperoxide. However, it's called the 'Mother of Satan' by Islamist extremists. Experts say it is made by mixing common household items such as drain cleaner and bleach to create a white powder with a strong smell.
It's so volatile that it can explode even if it's merely dropped. It can even explode spontaneously, experts say.
There have been very few reports of TATP being used in the United States; however, there have been more documented cases overseas -- including Richard Reid, who was arrested after he used TATP in his shoe and tried to light it on a flight.
The FBI is testing materials from the OU student's backpack, and from Hinrichs' apartment. Sources said a chemist from FBI headquarters was flown to Oklahoma to help with the gathering of evidence to be used for testing.
However, FBI officials will not comment on any aspect of the investigation, including what sources have told Eyewitness News 5.
Suuuure. All I see is out of Oklahoma.
pinging you to ping request at #63
You're welcome. Just trying to keep it bumped.
I didn't say TATP didn't have a smell, I said it didn't smell like acetone, even though it was made from acetone. (Acetone, incidentally, doesn't have an "acrid" smell.)
Sometimes I think the Anarchist's Cookbook was written by the FBI as a counterintelligence operation to kill anarchist wannabees. It has some good stuff in it, and some very, shall we say, unwise instructions in it as well.
Then you shouldn't have responded to post #50 in which I ridiculed those who were claiming that TATP had no smell.
Your response put you on their ignorant side and has left you flailing on this thread. It's unseemly.
If you agreed with me all along that TATP emits a very detectable smell, then you should have been clear and made a simple post to such effect.
If you just wanted to say that TATP has an aroma, but it doesn't precisely mimick the famous smell of nail polish remover (i.e. "acetone"), then again, you should have been more clear.
Your lack of clarity is your problem, after all, not mine.
Your words. (1) Acetone isn't TATP. (2) Acetone doesn't have a "powdered form," and in particular TATP isn't acetone in powdered form. Equating TATP with acetone is nonsense, and doing so with contempt, as your post does, makes it rank. Let's speak again about clarity, ignorance, flailing, and unseemliness.
Furthermore, I don't know for a fact that pure, freshly prepared TATP has any odor at all, notwithstanding your other post. Do you? It is easy to prepare in impure form, and whether such material smells has little bearing on whether the pure material does.
Yes, I do know. Besides the post from a 3rd party source that I made up in #53 (with source link), and besides TATP being made from nail polish remover, it's generically safe to say that **any** subtance that deteriorates, decays, or evaporates, even water, has a smell at some level.
TATP decays rapidly, by the way.
What evidence do you have that the material you are speaking of was pure? (And, what of the other points in my post?)
...besides TATP being made from nail polish remover, it's generically safe to say that **any** subtance that deteriorates, decays, or evaporates, even water, has a smell at some level.
Pure TATP decays rapidly, by the way.
Yes, it suggests to me that he was acting alone, trying to find something that would work, and was able to find a recipe with obtainable ingredients by reading jihadist publications.
That amounts to zero evidence of purity, and lacks germane response to my other points.
Purity doesn't matter.
A substance emits a smell that is detectable if it decays, deteriorates, or evaporates...pure or not.
Post #53 thoroughly debunked the notion of TATP having no smell. Your machinations after that post have left me thinking that you still don't get it.
Hinrichs and Nick Berg
"Yes, it suggests to me that he was acting alone,"
It could also suggest that he was hanging out with jihadis who thought it would be a cool idea if he made a car bomb.
Sounds like he was going to use the TATP as a primary to set off the AN.
I think this Guy was a pathetic Suicide Bomber.
Listen, his goal was to kill Football fans... The reason I say so is because if you frequent the Gory and Snuff websites, like "The OGRISH" (sp?) and the like...
you will see that most "Crime Lab or Criminal Scene" photos, where a suicide has taken place, are of hangings or gun shots to the head or bank robbers who are at the end of the road and then kill themselves....., or of people jumping in front of trains or off buildings, or suicide by cop, ETC.
The suicides that have to do with BOMBs are of suicide bombers. You will see these pictures on those websites as well and the only part that remains is the tenacious and all durable head. The head doesn't explode. : ) I know it's wild.
I think America has seen it's first Suicide Bomber. Although I could be wrong.
Even on America's Most Wanted... there was a famous guy --- the Pizza Deliver Guy in NY State or PA, that was a Bank Robbers when someone forced him to go in with a Bomb secured around his neck. This guy said he was innocent and that the authorities should take the bomb off his neck. He didn't want to die.
The Bomb and Suicide combination is not the normal M.O.(Method).
Well that is my take and that's all folk... Have a great day.
I find it interesting to be listening to President Bush, and reading this about TATP at this same time.
I really think he is trying to tell us to be "AWARE", stay on-board, and at the same time, let us know....he knows about this.
Is this my tin-foil moment???
I think we're all having a tinfoil moment.
