WASHINGTON -- Senators beginning what ought to be a protracted and exacting scrutiny of Harriet Miers should be guided by three rules. First, it is not important that she be confirmed. Second, it might be very important that she not be. Third, the presumption -- perhaps rebuttable but certainly in need of rebutting -- should be that her nomination is not a defensible exercise of presidential discretion to which senatorial deference is due.

"Do we really want to call people "leftist" when we disagree?"

Globalist would be a better term to use with sWill. He is a big U.N. supporter.

As Rush stated, this pick was made from weakness. And I add, by so doing, President Bush contributes to his own lame duckness.

If the nomination is defeated and President Bush picks a stellar nominee, he will redeem himself and reinvigorate his presidency.

Did I spell his name right?

You spell real good.   Try your hand at reading this:

You, who do nothing for the movement, don't get to decide what I do, or anyone else here does. You're exactly what I said you were earlier. You are flailing around and making an ass of yourself. Take a break -- you reek of Moveon.org mentality.

Ah bet she's spoiled to. Wants everything. Like my wife, for her birthday she wanted something that went from zero to 200 fast. Didn't care what it was. So I got her a bathroom scale.

You need a 'bah dum bum' after that kind of humor. :o)

Or at least an Ed McMahonish "Heeeeeeeere's BLACKTooth!"

Of all the criticisms of Will I've seen here, yours is the least compelling.

And you would never shine in a spelling bee.

But I am qualified to sit on the Supreme Court.

"This lady is was a gun owner. It is documented she owns/ed a .45 caliber pistol for self defense."

A great gun to eat but for a woman's weapon of self defense, it doesn't seem like the best choice. Maybe just some BS to try putting her in good with gun owners.

Many conservatives consider gun control more a threat to America than abortion.

Many liberals do too, but they either have body guards, or carry permits. They just don't want you to have one. Remember Carl Rowen?

Will is right. Period. The ad hominem attacks fall flat and just show weak intellect.

Agree with you. I guess the hope is that Miers will just rubber stamp Scalia's opinions. Bush had plenty of other choices who were known quantities and had the requisite expertise and experience.

"There were actually several who vetted him [Kennedy]. I spent about 10 minutes with him, going over his resume."

Thanks for nothing.

That's what did Ann Coulter in! For some unknown, to me, reason, she viscerally HATES Justice Roberts. She just keeps digging her heels in on him and refuses to say that she was wrong about him. Hence, she has just rewritten and resubmitted that first negative column about him many times over.

And what do we all get, should Miers' nomination be declined? Just more of the same mess and hysterics; that's what!

" In addition, the president has forfeited his right to be trusted as a custodian of the Constitution."

Wow. I wouldn't have believed this was George Will.

Hell, he forfeited that right when he blithely signed the assault on the First Amendment (didn't he promise to veto it during his first campaign?). Ever since then, he's been an untrustworthy "guardian" of any of our cherished freedoms, and needs to be watched 24/7.

"Don't you remember what happened when Bork got "BORKED"? Need a refresher course on who we got on the third try? Does the name Souter ring any bells?"

You might want to take that refresher course.

She will be the opposite of Breyer and Stevens ... an unknown who will tilt right on Constitutional issues, not left like the dead-souls other two.

But I am qualified to sit on the Supreme Court.

But will never see the light of day of such an opportunity until nominated to do so.
