Gay community outing public figures via blogs

NEW YORK - Though decried by many gay-rights leaders, “outing” — the practice of exposing secretly gay public figures — is expanding into new terrain as Internet bloggers target congressional staffers, political strategists, even black clergy whose sermons and speeches contain anti-gay rhetoric.

Few issues are as divisive within the gay community. Numerous gay organizations, such as the Human Rights Campaign and the Log Cabin Republicans, staunchly oppose outing, yet many other activists support it when the targets are public figures — or their aides — who work against gay rights or condemn homosexuality.

“It’s not the gay thing that’s the problem — it’s the hypocrisy,” said Michael Rogers, creator of a Web log that has been at the fore of several recent outing campaigns. “I’m going to be calling out the politicians who vote against us and work against the interests of the very community they come from.”

Live Vote: Is outing gay public figures effective?

“Outing is not an effective tool,” Barron said. “I don’t know a single vote on gay-rights issues that was changed because of outing. ... Folks should be focusing on the hard work that needs to be done and not get bogged down in personal attacks.”

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said outing can backfire by distracting attention from more substantive political issues or by prompting conservative politicians to harden their anti-gay views after aides and associates are outed.

When will Oprah be outed? It seems people who live in her condo think this is Chicago's best kept secret.

As long as it's the truth and not libel then good.

"Extortion or blackmail does not necessarily have to be about money and it's a felony. Defamation of character is also grounds for legal action."

This is true. But there must be some clear demand for some quid pro quo in exchange for not making public facts for a case of extortion. As for defamation of character that requires an element of either slander or libel. The courts have over the years set a very high bar for establishing this. Some of the minimum requirements include that the offending party must have stated or published something which they knew to be false at the time it was said or published, that they knew it would cause substantial harm, and that they recklessly said or published said falsehood irregardless. In other words defamation suits will go no where quickly.

We all struggle with something. Doesn't make it hypocritical to say that it is not "normal".

Excellent point.

As someone I once knew used to say, Jesus went to the Cross for all of us...and for each of us.

He went to the Cross for each and every sinner. He bought us and then gave us the right to decide to love Him or not.

He wants our love freely given and nothing less.

So every time you see a sinner, remember that Jesus went to the Cross just so that person might be able to choose Salvation.

Every time we discriminate against a sinner, we discriminate against the Lord.

The ultimate outcome of their 'outing' is that the political figure will be exposed as a fraud and then run out of office. This will just leave us room to replace them with people who are actually honest and trustworthy. Seems like they are on the same page with us.

Do you suppose they would mine if we outed a few of them as being socialists? Or would that just be redundant. And btw, no socialist or communist movement has ever been very nice to queers (their word, not mine). So its a little strange that they aren't more free market in their alliances.

True. How can you defame something that does not exist!

I have it on good authority that Anderson Cooper is a flaming homosexual.... is that outing, or stating the obvious?

I just looked up Oaf-rahs bio..It seems this Stedman character isn`t even mentioned. 51 years old, never been married, not even a boyfriend mentioned..Yessir she be gay!!! What is it with lesbos and talkshows? Rosie, Ellen Degenerate, now Oaf-rah..I guess this is why Tom Cruise likes Oafrah so much, he can relate to the gayness.

Gay public officials may actually be 'double gated swingers.' Bi-sexuals get more opportunities, as they say. Meaning they may go which ever way the wind blows. Of course, we must nominate both the Xlintons for this dubious honor. Freepers may know about the H-witch but bubba is as bubba does. What the meaning of 'is' today is variable just like a bubba. If you focus is instant gratification . . . Get my drift?

No matter how much someone talks about the homo's it seems that someone comes along and defends them. LOL All this about how it is wrong to speak against them because Jesus died for them too.

Yep he sure did die for them too. He also told us that they would be the destruction of a nation, and that if they didn't repent they would burn in the lake of fire. So what is the issue? Someone just can't stand the truth being spoken about the willfull sinfulness of this lifestyle.

As if to say that if we are critical of the homo movement, and it's people and leaders, we aren't letting Jesus work in them. They need to hear the truth, and you need to get a clue on what is going on.

It is funny, you never hear these arguments and excuses when talking about anything else, only the homos. Something deeply disturbs me about that. I think the church has enough problem keeping the homo's from taking over. In fact i will be there are great amount of non-changed, unrepentant homosexuals in the church in leadership positions.

But instead of letting a person give the whamo truth against this the apologizers all come out of the woodwork (closet) and scream, Jesus Died for them.

This is addressed to me, but either you don't mean me or you didn't read my post.

The gay lifestyle is leading them straight to hell! And their movement that tells them and society that it is OK to live that livestyle is aiding and abetting Satan.

Does that clear it you for you, Dude.

But, on the other hand, there is hope if they repent and accept Jesus and turn away from their sin.

My comment speaks for itself. In your case, I would remind you to "judge not, lest ye be judged." Hate the sin but love the sinner. That's what Jesus did.

Or are you telling us you know better than Jesus and we should listen to the all knowing "you," perfect and sinless as you are.

Hey Mr. Homo...

"Me and Jesus and the home boy's is waiting to hear from you"

How big a man is yo? Big enough to say you is wrong?
