What they don't seem to understand is that the GOP is by no means assured of winning such a fight.
We conservatives need to pipe down until the facts are all in instead of going off half-cocked.
Perhaps, but this is GW's last good chance to get a conservative judge on the court. It is also his last good chance to do something good for the country and get his last jab at the libs.

I was pretty discouraged when I heard Bush's announcement this morning. Most conservatives wanted Bush to put up an "in-your-face" nominee and have a battle royale over him or her.
Rush made a statement today that I thought was telling: "If you had to go to war, would you want the Senate Republicans as your army?" This says a mouthful. Because we have so many RINOs in the Senate who have threatened to vote against strong conservatives like Janice Rogers Brown or Michael Luttig, Bush's options were limited. He didn't want to put up a nominee that would be "Borked".
Knowing the quality of judges that W has nominated for district and appellate courts, do we think that all of a sudden he lowered his standards for the Supreme Court? He knows Miers and he knows her philosophy. He also understands what is at stake.
The Vice-President did interviews with Rush and Hannity today. I think the White House underestimated the conservative backlash. Thus, they brought out the VP to do damage control.
Conservatives are very angry. From the posts I've read, the RNC will take a big financial hit in the coming months. This could mean trouble for the mid-term elections.
I'll wait to hear Miers during the hearings before passing judgment.
We want that, we need that, we're that close with both houses of congress and the presidency.
The problem is 5 senators who aren't loyal to the conservative cause.....Do I need to name them?

The President knows her well and if he likes her, I like her.
Not to mention you can not be assured that RINO's like SNOWE, CHAFFEE, COLLINS,and even SPECTOR would vote FOR a strong conservative. Sometimes you battle plan is determined by your resources and even though we hold a statistical lead in Senate seats. There is a split in our party as is seen in this nomination. The big proble we have with Meirs is her "unknown" characteristics. I trust GW's judgement on this, but its going to be years and many decisions to discover whether she is like O'Conner or to her right. And at this point. We just don't know.

The Supreme Court, along with all forms of fallen government will soon be obsolete. Her nomination will have little if any effect on the future of America, since the problems of this world, especially nuclear terrorism, make everything else trivial in scope.

What does her religion have to do with her interpretation of the Constitution. What conservatives were expecting (and were promised repeatedly) were the nomination and confirmation of originalists like Scalia and Thomas. So far, we're two for two against. We've got a minimalist in Roberts and a complete unknown in Miers. Whether or not we can win the fight is not a reason to abandon the battle. If we can't explain and fight for our principles openly but instead have to resort to stealth candidates, then we might as well just merge the two parties and have done with it. Or maybe next time, actually elect a conservative.
Oh, yes...the facts will come out...and it looks to be another "Read My Lips" moment. Problem is...the Pubbies would never even ask nasty questions of her, so it'll never come out in the hearings. It'll come out in the decisions rendered.
Not really. A solid, mellow conservative would be fine. He isn’t capable of that though.
A Christian (real one) isn’t preoccupied with a “to-the-death confrontation” with Democrats or anyone else. Physical life isn’t be-all/end-all and Almighty God protects His children that please Him and delivers their enemies unto them.

Not exactly. I'd settle for a qualified conservative. Not that the Senate would approve such a person, but they'd be worth fighting for in advance of settling for an unknown mediocrity.

On one of the threads on FR running, people are whining about Miers not being married and not having children...I could hardly believe that argument for her not being acceptable to be on the Supreme Court...and there were the usual nut cases who want to make her out to be a lesbian, because she is not married to a man..does it never enter some folks minds, that some women chose not marry, instead chosing to devote themselves completely to their career?...or that some women have never fallen in love?...
Believe me, if Miers was married and had children, there would be those who would claim she was a bad mom, (and therefore unacceptable to be on the Supreme Court) because she dared to have a career, along with a husband and children(oh, the horror of that)...but there are those on FR, who do think exactly along those lines...sad...
One can certainly disagree with Pres. Bush...certainly nothing wrong with that at all...but I think we should stop the hysterics, get the facts,(real facts, not gossip, not rumors), and then make a decision in our minds, based on the facts...

That has been the brunt of my disppointment today, not that she is a "stealth" nominee.
I like the fact that she is not an elitist snob. I like the fact that she didn't go to Yale and that she is not part of the ivory tower, judicial, holier-than-thou brigade. She got places not due to an Ivy League resume, but instead due to hard work and determination. Hopefully, she has the intellect to go along with that as well. Everyone has been saying that the Supreme Court has lost touch with reality
(i.e. the recent eminent domain case), so someone who is more like the average American should be a welcome addition to the mix. Cheney told Hannity she IS of the Scalia and Thomas mold. Let's hope so. In any event, we are no worse off with her than we were with O'Connor and Bush still has three more years to appoint another justice. By the looks of some of the remaining justices, it very well could happen sooner rather than later (John Paul Stevens or Ginsburg could be next).
We are all mostly spectators at this point. None of us know anything substantial about her. There are a number of scenarios I can imagine as this plays out. If you think that the Republicans have trouble with the nomination, imagine what the dimcrats are experiencing right now!
If they try to kill the nomination for lack of experience, they also are going to be on the wrong side of the diversity question. Ginsberg is a Valley girl. My guess is that Miers is not, and that she will draw demo blood whether she is confirmed or not.
Bush is holds the cards and is dealing. He knows what the next two or three cards are....the dems don't. This whole thing is becoming fun to watch. Bush is not going to nominate another Souter, period.
