OU bomber had huge explosive stash; Mystery remains over suicide outside Sooners game
World Net Daily ^ | 10/3/05

© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com Local and federal agents were carting away what was described as a huge cache of explosives from the apartment of the 21-year-old student who blew himself up outside the stadium where 84,000 watched a Sooners football game.

Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., died in the explosion, according to FBI officials.

Investigators believe Hinrichs detonated a bomb about 8 p.m. Saturday, just 100 yards away from the packed football stadium.

Police were overheard telling residents it would take "several trips and could take up to 24 hours" to remove it all, according to the Daily Oklahoman.

A canister trailer used for detonating or transporting potentially explosive material was being used to haul items away.

Officials said Hinrichs' motive for blowing himself up Saturday near the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium during the second quarter of OU's game against Kansas State remains under investigation.

OU President David Boren said Hinrichs was a student "who had very, serious personal problems that led to this tragic death."

Because of what happened, Boren said, the FBI had taken over the investigation.

Boren said the student had explosives strapped to his body.

Investigators would not say whether they believe Hinrichs intended to go inside the stadium before the detonation happened.

I was thinking the exact same thing as far as a reverse search. I'm going back through posts, making notes and documenting whatever I can. When I run across the address I saw posted I'll do what I can online as far as searches and such...

Everyone open yer cell phone owners manual if ya have one, check the "warnings" regarding cellular phones and blasting operations....common hazard of EMR near electro-explosive devices (EED's) and blasting operations was one of our primary concerns as well as any portable transciever within 300 feet of a suspect device before it was rendered safe.

Hopefully this "engineer" had his cell phone on when he armed his IED........ IMO per the nooooze reports and such his actions suggest he was gonna take some folks with him.....

Just my opinion of course...nothing more.

"More and more interesting tidbits come in and they really are trying to keep us from making the jump to terrorism."

Along those lines is the following article/story printed. Apparently the FBI automatically considers it "merely a suicide" if you haven't actively made threats to others beforehand. *shaking my head in disbelief*

BOMBING AT OU CAMPUS APPEARS TO BE ISOLATED SUICIDAL EVENT
Monday, October 03, 2005

It appears that an explosion near the football stadium at the University of Oklahoma is an isolated incident, but federal agents and bomb squad experts are still combing through the apartment of an OU junior killed in the blast.

Joel Hinrichs, who had been studying engineering at the University, apparently detonated an explosive while sitting on a bench about 100 yards from the packed stadium, during Saturday`s football game. Agents found materials used to make bombs in Hinrich`s apartment, but an FBI spokesman says there is nothing to suggest that Hinrich made any threats to others, meaning that this was merely a suicide.

Interesting statements from OU President released about 4 hours ago regarding the need to keep things quiet - saying it might interfere with ongoing investigations...

Open letter from the OU president
by OU President David L. Boren

October 03, 2005

Congratulations are due to The Oklahoma Daily for the very thoughtful discussion on the editorial page about the need to inform the public during a critical situation and still respect the need for law enforcement agencies to maintain silence about some matters to help them find the truth. It is hard to wisely strike the balance between these two needs.

Three specific decisions were made during the recent incident illustrating the difficulty of making the right decision. First, I decided to wait to make a public announcement inside the stadium until six minutes before the end of the game. I did so in order to give our bomb dogs and experts more time to sweep the parking garage and stadium exits before spectators began leaving. There was nothing magic about the six minute number; it was just a rough estimate in trying to obtain the right balance.

Second, we all heard another explosion on Sunday night with no warning. The university police and I were notified about five minutes after we heard it. The FBI, which was removing materials from the room of the deceased, decided that for safety reasons they had to immediately detonate the materials at the Norman Police Range and shouldn’t wait until we were told. They made a tough decision. We immediately asked them to notify 10 p.m. news broadcasts that there were no bombs and that they had deliberately destroyed in a controlled environment those materials which they had found.

Third, on Sunday, when it became clear that law enforcement officials would not hold a press conference, I decided that I should do so in order to reassure our community and provide as much information as possible to address unanswered concerns and false rumors. I know that some in law enforcement did not want me to do so. At that point, however, I felt it was my responsibility to provide information to our university community, and that I could wait no longer. The law enforcement officials, including the FBI, have worked with us very well, and I did my best to avoid releasing specific data which they felt would damage their investigation.

Any of these decisions could be questioned. The Daily is right to raise this important issue.

Finally, I want to thank our OU police department and OU staff members (including those from Athletics, Housing and Food Services, Physical Plant, Landscaping, student RA’s and community officers) and those who helped them for long hours of hard work. Special thanks also go to our students — especially those we had to move from their rooms at 6 a.m. — for reacting very sensibly and responsibly. If students or parents have any suggestions for the future, please feel free to call the President’s Action Line at 325-1212.

Sincerely,

David L. Boren

President

Re: " radio waves could have set off his devise before he could get it into place"

Yup; it's called "induction".

Sometimes it happens by accident, when the wavelength of a particular signal happens to coencide with the length of one of the det wires. Usually a strong, fairly close transmission.

I would expect that at least one radio station would have been doing a "remote" from the game, as well as a lot of Police / Security traffic.

Or... it just might have been an Angel.

Either way; Thanks be to God, Zeus, Bhudda, Brahmman, or whoever was on deity duty that night, that the only casualty was the looney perp.

My sincere condolances, FRiend.

So... I guess that means that they won't be coming home for the Ramidan pig roast, then?

Re your #44;

" Hell, try it out on the ACLU."

The last time I suggested a similar approach to the ACLU, I got ZOTted for a couple of weeks!

Now I feel discriminated against. {;^)

So... I guess that means that they won't be coming home for the Ramidan pig roast, then?

My Sicilian grandmother taught me how to make sauce and meatballs for pasta. I grew up waking up to the smell of it cooking every Sunday morning.

Every time I make it, my friends and relatives urge me to market it.

Those two sons can't eat it now because it has pork neckbones and spareribs in it.

As an agnostic, I refuse to tweak the recipe just to accomodate a religious conviction.

It's beyond outrageous that you were padlocked in that stadium!!!

What if someone had a heart attack or other medical emergency? And if you couldn't get out, it would have taken longer for medical personnel to get in.

This stor had BETTER not go away because Law Enforcement needs to find a better way to handle situations like this because we haven't seen the last of this kind of attack.

I saw stories on on cnn.com, foxnews online and several others.
There is a lot unknown about this story, how should they cover it?

How about, for starters, showing the kids picture which clearly shows he's an Allah wannbe?

How about admitting they found other explosives in the kid's dorm?

How about admitting they found Islamic materials in the kid's dorm?

How about admitting they padlocked people inside the stadium and didn't know if there were other explosives already placed inside?

How about admitting they have a HUGE Islamic population in that area?

Ooohhhh, I don't know.....maybe the same way they'd be covering it if he'd blown himself up right outside a mosque or an abortion clinic?

I have dropped in on the OU Rivals board. They don't seem to be talking about it a great deal. I was surprised that their football fans weren't talking it up more.

It was reported on two of our news channels last night on the early news. A Freeper heard it on both channels.

OU Daily Staff and Advisor are great! Those students are going to make first class reporters when they graduate. They will not report even a small article without two sources on something like a speech.

I'm hearing that the guy tried to enter the stadium several times and was turned back for having a backpack.

So he went back across the street and sat down on the bench and was strapping the bomb onto his body so he could enter the stadium without a backpack and it exploded prematurely.

I think it was mentioned on 9 AND 5. I watched 9 again at 10 and like you, heard nothing at all--and 5 of course didn't do news because of the football game. Let me check 5's website--I won't go to 9's site (same site as the Daily Oklahoman) because they have some kind of weird coding that my browser hates. Lately, they want registration too, I hear they're charging for it now, but I don't know that for a fact.
