HE KNOWS how she stands MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OF THE DIMS. The Dims might be getting played here!

I pray you're right, but I keep seeing SOUTER in my mind.

Bill Kristal just said on Fox that Bush flinched and capitulated.

If he said that, she's a good choice. Kristal is not my favorite.

Texas at the time, like all southern states was a one-party system. Maybe her donation to Al Gore was more for business purposes than for political beliefs. That's how democrats operate, after all, donate to us or you are our enemy.

I was referring to the contribution that went to the DNC on or with a day of the Bush/Dukakis Presidential election. Texas voted for Bush, Miers was for Dukakis.

... a lawyer who spends five of her peak earning years on the Texas Lottery Commission is no legal star.

I earlier wondered if she isn't the legal world's equivalant of Carly Fiorina. Pure speculation on my part, as I know next to nothing about Ms. Miers.

I've had it with this Rovian crap. They had two opportunities to send a message to conservatives by nominating a known strict constructionist justice, and we get two stealth nominees.

The heck with it.

I'm off the reservation.

Woe R Us! LOL! You would think the world ended this morning by the likes of this thread. Barely a fact in almost 800 posts and you are all ready to throw in the towel.

Add another thoroughly disappointed conservative here. Miers appointment reeks of cronyism and makes no sense at all, other than she'll probably get a pass from the ABA because she's a charter member of the bar "old girls club" -- although as one who supports a conservative president, don't count on it.

She's a graduate of an (at best) third tier law school (SMU) with practice experience primarily in Texas. The judicial system in Texas is roundly disliked by the bar in the rest of the country because of cases like Texaco v. Pennzoil and many outlandish tort cases. This is not a bar respected like the Supreme Court bar or even the Delaware Chancery bar, where the most sophisticated corporate and takeover cases are argued. Then again, she was apparently long a Democrat -- supported Gore in 1988 and Lloyd Bentsen. Oh, I know she may have been a DINO (but didn't support Reagan apparently), but it looks to me like she's cozy with whomever is in power. Which I'd expect from the chairman of a major law firm whose partners have to win cases no matter who's in charge. So, other than her personal tie to Georger W, I see no serious conservative record at all.

I very much fear we have a Sandra Day O'Conner in Bush clothing.

Also, at 60, she's very old if Bush wants to create a legacy on the court. In fact, maybe that's the deal with the Dems: he can pick a nonentity woman who may or may not be a conservative (so the Dem's have shot of corrupting) but won't last too long on the court in any case, so if the Dems are back in power, they'll get to pick up the seat. Color me disgusted with Bush. You would think he learned his lesson with the disaster of Michael Brown.

Not only am I unenthusiastic, I'd actually be inclined to vote against her on what little I know now. There are far far more qualified women conservatives available.

What next, will we find out she was a sorority sister of Laura Bush at Southern Methodist U????

Can ya all say "President Hillary Rodham Clinton"?

Reading through the responses this morning this is what I thought. I don't have any real information on the candidate, but judging from the anger this morning I'd say Bush just lost the next presidential candidate a lot of votes - and that is scary because Hillary supporters will arrive by the busloads, inlcuding the dead and many phantom city workers.

If a past contribution to a dem candidate or the DNC means you are forever "liberal".....then does it follow that we should ban & denigrate the hundreds of freepers who voted once for Jimmy Carter even though they now see what a mistake it was?

While a minor issue, it troubles me that so many people are making such a big deal out of the fact that she "went to work" put herself through college. Was I the only one who did that?

No, you're not the only one. I did that and that is when I became a conservative.

i am tuning out the histrionics of FR.

ME TOO.

One of the reasons I NEVER visit DU is that I can't stand emotional drama queens, and I hate lies.

Either we are being infested with DU visitors, or our own freepers have taken a long walk off a short pier....

Having questions and being disappointed are one thing, but this is a display of lunacy suitable only for the left......

"Just the fact that she's a CHRISTIAN (gasp) is enough to send them over the edge. First a CATHOLIC now THIS????" No, it is because Exodus believes homosexuals and be changed by the transforming power of Christ! That is why MSM will go ballistic.

Not to mention some of the posters on FR ...

And that's just it. We had the chance to shift the balance back, to put some people on the bench that would actually do their jobs according to the Constitution. But no, Dumbya picks a pro-infanticide wingnut with zero-experience and crap for credentials to the USSC???? Maybe saying Dumbya is accurate. Why the lie? This is what I really want to know. Why tell us all that tripe about a Scalia/Thomas type of nominee only to sucker punch us with this pick? Screw the GOP. I suppose I'll have to call myself an Independent Conservative. How sad is it when the party that is supposed to be Conservative just plain isn't? It was said there are 40 true Conservatives in the House but really, what good can 40 do? If those others on the Hill won't listen to them, then those 40 (while fighting the good faith) are fighting a losing battle.

This will be another CFR- the dems will applaud the choice, a few Republicans will jump ship and vote against her, but she will be approved. And all that alleged strategery will have backfired.

Another thought. Suppose the WH strategists are hinting that she is not a conservative. The dems bite, approve her and she turns out to be conservative.
