Explosion kills one during OU game
by Rhett Brackeen and Ryan McGhee

October 01, 2005

One person was killed Saturday night in an explosion during the second quarter of the OU/Kansas State game.

OU police Sgt. Gary Robinson said: "We heard a loud explosion outside the stadium, a device was exploded. We have one fatality and we have the area sectioned off. We are checking to see if there are any devices."

The explosion occurred in the courtyard east of G.L. Cross Hall, Robinson said.

He said after the area was cleared of any other possible devices the police would check on other injuries.

"We're letting the hazardous device units do what they do," Robinson said.

Robinson said after the game fans would be let out on the east side of the stadium towards Jenkins Avenue. During half time fans were not allowed to leave the stadium on the west side.

Hard to tell at this point. I know when I was in college I was a lab assistant and went in to work on a Saturday. Someone had left a gas line to the bunsen burner on (without the burner hooked up) and I went into a lab that was a "bomb" in the making. I had the sense to evacuate and call for help. They turned off the gas from the outside and eventually opened up the building.

Those gas lines are often on timers now. Still can cause problems, though.

The police are calling it a 'device' and were checking for other 'devices'.

This implies that it was intentional and not an accident.

Per update from KWTV-9, authorities on the scene say it was a bomb, and that a second device was also found and has been "taken care of". Occurred outside the stadium around halftime.
Some architecture students working on a project in a nearby building said they saw smoke and saw only one casualty. It's presumed that's the perp. Right now focus is on securing the area and finding an orderly way for fans to make their exit at the end of the game without compromising any possible evidence.
