Falling short on freedom - The NY Daily News Weighs In On The Demise Of The IFC
The New York Daily News ^ | 9/30/05 | Errol Lewis

Gov. Pataki's decision to eliminate the long-planned International Freedom Center from the World Trade Center site marks a low point in the tug of war that began over Ground Zero's meaning and symbols almost immediately after the calamity. A great many people hoped that the rebuilding process would tap the rich vein of America's democratic culture and showcase our best qualities - optimism, energy, ingenuity and diversity.

Those people have been sorely disappointed. The unceremonious demise of the Freedom Center makes clear that no statement about mankind's hopes for freedom or democracy will make it to Ground Zero without a ferocious, uphill battle.

Hmmmmm....another group of NYC elites seem to have their noses out of joint regarding the demise of the IFC.

Again, I'm not too disappointed. In fact - screw 'em.

Opinions on this editorial - anyone?

Build it on a retired navy ship - they regularly use them for bombing and torpedo practice.

The time has come to fight the communist imposed "diversity" in all its forms. Be an American. Love it or leave it. No more cowtowing to whiny, spoiled, pampered minorities demanding everyone meet their every whim or be accused of racism or intolerance.

It has to start somewhere, friends. This is a real victory.

Untrue!!!I whooped, hollered, and gave a 13 quack salute with my favorite duck call upon hearing the news.

"mankind's hopes for freedom or democracy"

To quote the Daily News. When a small group of people try to impose their will on a site with deep, tragic meaning for the American public, that is neither freedom nor democracy. It is an elitist intrusion.

Please read the opinion journal page for today, not a real victory just a delaying action against the evil of diversity and political correctness, ask Bil Bennett.

There is a great editorial about this in todays Saturday WSJ by Tunku Varadarajan. It talks about the courageous battle by Debra Burlingame who fought the IFC. What a woman!

Why don't we put a big billboard up there, too, and lease it out to anybody who's got the money? Because it's not appropriate. It's a memorial. For people who died there, victims of a terrorist act. It's not appropriate to fill up the space with anything else.

Thanks for the WSJ editorial.

Re: Yet in Debra Burlingame--the 51-year-old sister of Charles F. "Chic" Burlingame, the pilot of the plane that was crashed into the Pentagon by terrorists on September 11, 2001--rage has fueled eloquence.

Doesn't this give Debra Burlingame a certain amount of  "moral authority".  Since she was a sister rather than a mother I suppose it may not be "absolute".

The absolute worst-ever terrorist attack on our country that killed ~3000 people and the LSM refers to it as a mere 'calamity.' Their traitorous text should be burned!

Debra Burlingame - a true American Hero.
