The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Iran is displaying incredible confidence and boldness in their threats. Same with Venezuela. And, they are 'friends'. I think they are holding a "trump" card, but what exactly it is, I'm not sure.

You're right, they seem to have a huge set of stones right now. Why would they want to poke the hornet's nest with a stick? Obviously they feel that have some kind of advantage against us.

Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways gets set for inaugural
Toronto flight
The Daily Star ^ | October 31, 2005

Posted on 10/30/2005 2:10:32 PM PST by Lessismore

Airline plans to provide U.S. service by 2006

Abu Dhabi: Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab
Emirates, has completed final preparations for the launch of its new
route to Toronto, via Brussels, with the first flight taking off from Abu
Dhabi International Airport on Monday. Etihad flight 501 will be
welcomed into Brussels International Airport with a celebratory
dousing of the aircraft by the fire brigade and finally, a VIP reception
at Pearson International Airport, Toronto, with maple candies and
Belgian chocolates.

Sheikh Ahmad bin Saif al- Nahyan, the chairman of Etihad Airways and
chairman of the Civil Aviation Department of the emirate of Abu Dhabi,
said: "Our first trans-Atlantic flight to Toronto after only two years of
operations heralds further growth for Etihad Airways and will be a
launch pad for our services to the U.S. in summer 2006."

Etihad Airways will provide three weekly flights to Canada and
Belgium.

Etihad Airways has entered into its first code-share agreement with
SN Brussels Airlines, which enables the airline's customers to fly to a
greater number of important European cities such as Rome, Lyon,
Strasbourg, Geneva, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Oslo,
Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna.

OPINION: It's the smells we don't smell that should concern us as much, or even more, than the smells we do smell.

This is not an original opinion, but it is one I agree with.

The muslim mannifesto 1990 follows and is almost a copy of the communist manifesto 1963, therefore taking out our religion is part of it.

There was a time when I thought that all religions should be taught in school......today, I see how wrong I was.

It would require a well schooled and honest teacher, who did not have an agenda to teach such a class and they are few and far apart.

Two years ago, the muslim manifesto 1990 was easy to find with google, the last time I tried, it had vanished.

I have had KDWN on this afternoon, Jim Dallas the host, has made a painful effort to get people to wake up to the real war that is going on.

He has more calls that support the terrorists, then he does from people who are aware of the war that exists.

HUSAYBAH TERRORIST STRONGHOLDS DESTROYED

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Acting on tips from concerned citizens, Coalition Forces conducted a series of raids on suspected terrorist and foreign fighter safe houses in the town of Husaybah Oct. 29, killing an estimated 10 terrorists.

The houses were used as launch points to conduct attacks against local Iraqi citizens, Iraqi security and Coalition forces.

During the raids, which occurred simultaneously in two separate neighborhoods of Husaybah, Coalition forces were engaged by numerous terrorists. Firefights developed at both locations, during which Coalition forces called in close air support and destroyed both of the terrorist strongholds.

While Coalition Forces were leaving the area, they were alerted to another suspected terrorist house with fortified fighting positions. After further investigation, Coalition Forces called in an air strike, destroying the terrorist stronghold with precision guided munitions.

Great analysis EH! I was thinking along those lines this morning.

>> a successful attack shortly after the "Night of Power" would be considered by many Muslims as a sign of Allah's approval <<

IIRC, 10/29/05 is the 'Night of Determination'. From what I've read, this is the night the mahdi would become known. Would be a good time for someone to claim they are this mahdi and give his 'blessing' for major attacks to begin.

I agree with you and brucew - now is not the time to relax.

FOREIGN-FIGHTER LEADER TARGETED

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces, using precision air strike capabilities, targeted a senior al Qaeda in Iraq foreign fighter who was believed to be holding a meeting with other senior members of the terror organization in Husaybah Oct. 28.

Sources indicated Abu Mahmud and the other leaders were meeting to discuss an attack on Iraqi security or Coalition forces in the coming days.

Abu Mahmud, believed to be a Saudi, was the commander of several foreign fighter and terrorist cells in Husaybah, and was linked to several al Qaeda in Iraq and foreign fighter facilitators in the al Qaim, Karabilah, and Husaybah areas. Mahmud directed, planned and executed a large amount of the foreign fighter attacks on Iraqi security and Coalition forces, to include most SVBIED and IED attacks. He was also personally active in direct attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces.

The use of precision guided munitions to destroy the two adjoining foreign fighter safe houses and the timing of the strike mitigated the risk to civilians in the local area.

COALITION FORCES DISRUPT TERRORIST AMBUSH

TAJI, Iraq — Coalition Forces foiled an anti-Iraqi forces ambush around 9 p.m. Oct. 29 northwest of Baghdad.

The coordinated combat operation against the terrorist forces involved U.S. Army ground and aviation forces and close-air support from a U.S. Air Force F-15E which dropped a 500-pound precision-guided bomb on the enemy position.

The area was known for multiple ambushes with small-arms and rocket-propelled grenades against local Iraqi citizens, Iraqi security forces and Coalition Forces.

As ground forces from 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division secured the area around site, attack helicopters arrived at the scene and confirmed the individuals hiding in the bushes were enemy forces.

AH-64 Apache helicopters returned fire after being engaged from the ground. The Apaches continued to engage the anti-Iraqi forces as they scattered and tried to hide in vegetation. When multiple terrorists converged in one location, ground forces called in the F-15E air strike.

At least six terrorists were killed and five others were wounded and detained by Coalition Forces. No U.S. or civilian casualties were reported in the incident.

Coalition Forces Disrupt Ambush; U.S. Engineers Find Roadside Bomb

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30, 2005 – Coalition forces foiled a terrorist ambush in an area northwest of Baghdad late Oct. 29, military officials reported today.
The coordinated combat operation against the terrorist forces involved U.S. Army ground and aviation forces and close-air support from a U.S. Air Force F-15E, which dropped a 500-pound precision-guided bomb on the enemy position.

The area was known for multiple ambushes with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades against local Iraqi citizens, Iraqi security forces and coalition forces, officials said.

Around 9 p.m., a group of terrorists was spotted moving along a canal and getting into position for an ambush. As ground forces from 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, secured the area around the ambush site, attack helicopters arrived at the scene and confirmed that the individuals hiding in the bushes were enemy forces.

When the terrorists fired at the helicopters, the AH-64 Apaches engaged them with return gunfire.

Several enemy forces retreated into a nearby house, but later fled the premises as U.S. forces moved in.

The Apache helicopters continued to engage the terrorists as they scattered and tried to hide in vegetation. When several terrorists converged in one location, ground forces called in the F-15E air strike.

Coalition forces killed at least six terrorists in the combat operation, and wounded and detained five others. No U.S. or civilian casualties were reported.

In other operations in Iraq, Task Force Baghdad soldiers discovered a roadside bomb northwest of Baghdad on the evening of Oct. 28.

Combat engineers from 36th Engineer Group discovered the hidden improvised explosive device before it could be used to harm Iraqi security forces, Iraqi civilians or coalition forces.

Soldiers from 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, quickly secured the site after the discovery. An explosives ordnance disposal team recovered the bomb.

Ex-agent: Post-KGB Russia truly dysfunctional

Want to do business in Russia? Hire an ex-KGB man. Nothing like
good old-fashioned experience in the secret police to keep Russia's
criminal gangs out of your shop. Such is the implied advice of
73-year-old Moscow businessman Victor Cherkashin -- by no surprise
an ex-KGB man. Even "prominent liberals," he claims, agree that the
KGB produced "among the least corrupt members of the new society."

Cherkashin doesn't hide that he regrets the breakup of the KGB and,
indeed, the evil empire itself.

"It would require a well schooled and honest teacher, who did not have an agenda to teach such a class and they are few and far apart."

How right you are! I was talking with my husband today and he had talked with a 16 year old boy he works with. The kid said, "Our teachers don't push political stuff very much"... I told my husband - he's only 16, and I used to think the same thing about my teachers. It was only within the last few years that I began to recognize that most of the stuff a few teachers taught us was straight out of the "liberal playbook"...

I've never heard of the Muslim Manifesto before, thanks for mentioning it. I'll try to research it a little and if I find a good link I'll be sure to post it here.

As far as the anti-war folks not "getting it" I think people have taken the "question authority" thing way too far. The slight mistrust of authority that used to be somewhat healthy for our country has turned into blindness and outright propoganda. People jump at the chance to believe EVERYTHING that is opposite of the "official story" - even if it's only warranted in some situations (like OU (o;).

Recently, I've seen some pretty well-known "alternative viewpoint" websites saying that Al Qaeda is completely fabricated and there is no threat - AT ALL from any so-called terrorist organizations. Especially in light of the very real threat posed by Iran at this point this whole line of thought is very dangerous. I'm worried for our country, and my children. The only solace I can take is that I live in a pretty conservative, pro-gun area - if the war ever comes here it won't be a walk in the park for those wishing us harm...

I just read on some website today (sorry can't remember where) that the "night of power" as it was referred to was actually tonight. They stressed extra vigilance today, as well as the time period from Nov. 3 - 6 as that is the celebration time at the end of Ramadan.

Obviously they feel that have some kind of advantage against us.

Well, for one thing, they probably believe that the Mahdi is about to appear. Remember that the prophecies about the Ramadan eclipses and the Mahdi are primarily Shia beliefs, even though some Sunnis believe that as well. If the Mahdi appears, then they have Allah fighting on their side.

But they may well have more secular reasons for confidence ... nukes? Biochem? However I don't think they have any idea what's likely to happen to them if they try it ... they'd probably be turned into a sea of glass.
