The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

I've forgotten all my college chemistry. Godzilla will know. Check out the last paragraph, it may be meaningful, or not:

In maple syrup urine disease, the odor is described as "caramel-like," "malty," or like "maple syrup."

It was determined that 4,5-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-2[5H]-furanone (sotolone), a well-known flavor impact compound also present in fenugreek, lovage and buckwheat honey13, is responsible for the characteristic odor in the urine of affected individuals. The common name given to the disease is thus quite appropriate, as maple syrup also contains sotolone.*

Ingestion of fenugreek (a leguminous herb cultivated in southern Europe, northern Africa and India) resulted in a false suspicion of maple syrup urine disease when the doctor noticed the characteristic smell of the patient's urine. It has been reported where the patient was given fenugreek tea15 or a folk remedy containing the plant.

*Sotolon, also known as sotolone and fenugreek lactone, is an extremely powerful aroma compound with the typical smell of fenugreek and maple syrup.

The GC-MS analyses of ethanolic extracts from hairy roots revealed the presence of two important compounds: sotolone (1.2% of the volatile fraction) and 3-amino-4,5-dimethyl-2(5H)-furanone (17% of the volatile fraction). These results point out that biotechnological production of sotolone in bioreactors is possible.

You're welcome, here's this:

Fenugreek is also one of four herbs used for the Iranian recipe Ghormeh Sabzi.

A side effect of consuming even small amounts of fenugreek is a maple syrup or curry smell in the eater's sweat and urine which is caused by the potent aroma compound sotolone.*

Fenugreek is frequently used in the production of flavoring for artificial syrups.

The taste of toasted fenugreek is additionally based on substituted pyrazines, as is cumin. By itself, it has a somewhat bitter taste.

Note: The following text is an exact quote:
---

http://www.fbi.gov/page2/oct05/nuclear_terrorism102805.htm
NUCLEAR TERRORISM
What We're Doing To Prevent It

10/28/05

It's virtually unthinkable —a nuclear attack by terrorists. But to protect the nation, we have to think about it—to plan and prepare now...and more importantly, to take aggressive steps to help ensure that it never happens.

On 10/26, FBI Counterterrorism exec John Lewis testified on this subject before a House Subcommittee on Prevention of Nuclear and Biological Attack.

His message? As the "lead law enforcement and investigative agency charged with responding to terrorist threats involving nuclear weapons or materials," we're absolutely committed to using the full range of our skills and resources to protect the country from the threat of nuclear terrorism. But we can't—and don't—do the job alone. We coordinate closely with a range of partners—including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Energy—and draw on specific expertise from across government and even overseas.

A few examples of these partnered initiatives:

National and international efforts to "prevent terrorists from accessing, using, or smuggling nuclear weapons—or the materials needed (such as enriched uranium and plutonium) to construct" them—including through interagency nuclear smuggling focus groups, through our coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at American ports, and by working with experts at the Department of Energy and national labs to obtain "rapid technical analysis" of suspect materials.
Initiatives between our 50+ overseas offices and our international partners to reduce and expose the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials worldwide. We teach classes on the subject, too.
Initiatives and incident response plans between our 56 field offices across the country and "security personnel at critical nuclear facilities." We also play a leadership role within the interagency Domestic Nuclear Detection Office charged with strengthening the nation's ability to detect the movement of illegal nuclear devices or fissile material.
In-depth assessments from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California to help us "determine the credibility of nuclear/radiological materials," including issues related to both the possession and potential use of such materials.
Four Department of Energy/FBI tabletop training exercises a year for state and local law enforcement and first responders to improve the government's emergency response capabilities.
There are plenty more details in the full testimony , and, given the importance of the threat of nuclear terrorism, we encourage everyone to take the time to read it.

As Mr. Lewis concludes, "We will do everything in our power to anticipate these threats and prevent them from becoming a reality."

Thanks MamaDearest for pointing to the stealth-bomber story.

You're welcome Cindy. Makes me wonder how accessible those stealth-bomber plans were - it seems too easily, I'm afraid.

You may be correct as you are the second to mention the almond-like smell.

Googling I found this incident from 2002 that reminds me of the boys at OU in the underground tunnel with the vial.

12 Mar 2002

Man Arrested For Possession of Cyanide In Chicago

CHICAGO, IL: A man who was arrested on Saturday night was formally charged on Monday with storing deadly powdered cyanide in an underground passage that makes up part of the city's mass transit system. The suspect is said to had taken over a Chicago Transit Authority storage room under the downtown district and stored sodium cyanide and potassium cyanide there. University of Illinois-Chicago police arrested the suspect and a juvenile on Saturday night for allegedly trespassing.

According to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court, the two people were found in a steam tunnel under the university's education building. The FBI said the man was wanted on charges of fleeing to avoid prosecution in Wisconsin after failing to appear on charges in Door County alleging vandalism against utility systems that knocked out electrical power to a town of 9,000 people. When he was arrested, the suspect was carrying a vial containing a powder that was determined to be sodium cynanide- sodium carbonate.

The juvenile told FBI agents that the man had taken over an area within a CTA underground passageway to store chemicals. The man was interviewed on Saturday night and admitted that he had keys to various CTA sub-stations. Local news reports said the man thought of himself as a self-styled "anarchist" (domestic terrorist) and used to hang around with computer hackers, using the screen name "Dr Chaos."

I work with a Nigerian RX who immigrated here about 6 yrs ago...she is irate over why people do not get it is religious persecution (terrorists)

Many could stand to walk a mile in the Nigerian RX's shoes. I sympathize with what she has endured and our nation's churches would benefit from taking this woman and having her speak to their congregations to bring them up to snuff about the state of religion in the context of the world she knows and has personally experienced.
