Gun law critics fear state will become O.K. Corral
Sarasota Herald-Tribune ^ | 10/2/05 | Latisha Gray

Joe Brower says everyday life is like "Wild Kingdom." It's survival of the fittest. And in his world, criminals don't attack people with guns; people with guns are the strong ones.

If some criminal mistakes him for prey, as of today, a new law gives him the right to shoot with the gun he keeps at his side.

"A lion out in Africa doesn't go for the strongest zebra," said Brower, a 44-year-old software engineer. "It goes for the weakest. Human predators do the exact same thing. If you are armed, that makes you stronger."

The "Stand Your Ground" law says instead of running, people who fear for their lives have the right to defend themselves -- no matter where they are.

Gun owners like Brower say the new law will make criminals think twice before they attack. But others who feel uneasy about the legislation say it could turn Florida into the Wild West.

One national group, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, is warning tourists to stay away from Florida for their own safety. Visitors to the state get wide-eyed when they hear about the new law.

More guns in the hands of non criminals = less crime. Then add this twist re self protection, and there will be even less crime.

Then add a two strikes law (3 is too many) to really take the trash off the street, and Floriduh might become a really safe state for the non criminals.

The only time they ever got it right was when they didn't quote me.

For years, I've been waiting to see the return of the "Wild West". Every time some state lightens up a bit on gun ownership, this is the first thing we hear.

Well, it's time to put up or shut up--LOL! Gun grabbers with their scary predictions are sooooooooooooo lame.

As usual, the Brady idiots are showing their hoplophobic ignorance. I guess it's a waste of time to try to tell them that when citizens are armed, crime goes down.

I messaged Joe before posting the article. I work in this paper's newsroom (I kid you not) and read it as it was being worked Friday night. It got precisely the kind of headline the newspaper wanted it to have. I have to pick my battles. I could have fights every day if I wanted.

The newspaper business is in such a shambles. The only thing that will save it is responsible, grown-up Americans taking it back, like Fallujah. That is not what the J-schools are churning out.

Are there any conservative writers/reporters/editors, young or old, looking for newspaper jobs? They're badly needed.

OK, time to strap on my PPK/S and go out looking for someone to dis me. ;-)

But others who feel uneasy about the legislation say it could turn Florida into the Wild West

The anti-gun media has used that old saw for so long it's grown whiskers. When I was living in FL during the time we were trying to get a shall issue CCW law passed the FL media was in a continuous frenzy over the idea of civilians carrying concealed guns. After a Democrat governor vetoed the first bill that was passed, a Republican governor (Martinez) was elected and signed into law the next CCW bill that was passed.

When that law was finally enacted over the furious opposition from the leftist media and the national anti-gun gang the local Tampa Bay media became even more frenzied in their attacks on the new law, the legislature, the governor, and anyone else who had a hand in getting it enacted. If I heard or read phrases such as "wild west shootouts on our sidewalks", or "gun-toting vigilantes", or "shootouts on our highways", or "gunslingers in the mall" once I must have seen and heard them five hundred times.

Of course no such things ever occurred, and as could have been predicted by a rational media, FL's serious crime rate went down every year thereafter.

The Sarasota H-T is a NY times owned rag which was second only to the St. Pete Times in hysterically attacking the FL CCW law, so it doesn't surprise me at all that it is still using those same tired old cliches to attack the new "Stand Your Ground" law. I only wish that the state I now live (GA) in would enact a similar law. People should be able to defend their families and themselves without fear of being sued into bankruptcy by the dead or injured criminal and/or his relatives.

Your comments about criminals attacking visitors is spot on.

Several years ago (more than ten?) the Florida state legislature enacted a law changing the car tags on rental cars. Why? It turned out that criminals operating in high tourist volume cities (Miami, Orlando, etc) were looking for rental cars. With the special rental car tag, visible and illuminated at night, it was very easy to sort out the tourist, with high value cameras and large amounts of cash, from the locals and then just attack the tourist.

Thanks for the ping, Joe. And, nice job with the reporter. It's hard to get very far as they usually carry the anti-gun concept in their head.

Interesting story with one error. The Discovery Channel has a show about investigating history using modern forensic tools. The coroner's report showed Mclaury was shot under the right arm with an 8 guage shotgun. Apparently Mclaury was reaching for a rifle in a saddle scabbard when the horse shied and turned Mclaury into the shotgun blast.
Anyhow, the conclusion of their investigation was that the Earps attempted a good arrest and the Cowboys resisted. Fatal error. As an aside, the movie "Tombstone" is maybe the most accurate movie made on the story. Not perfect of course, but pretty good. And Val Kilmer was absolutely the best Doc Holiday ever.

Pick up the phone and call for a pizza and a cop. See which one gets there first.

Also see which one has a pizza and which one has a donut!

I watched another OK Corral story on one of the satellite channels the other day, and they said that, while the Earps were on the way to the Corral, the sherrif told them he had already disarmed the Clampetts, so the Earps hid their firearms as they approached.

Gun law critics fear state will become O.K. Corral

By LATISHA R. GRAY

This 'article' adds further proof to my hypothesis, to wit ....

According to "Union Rules", every article now written and published in the USA that is firearms related MUST be written by some ditz reporterette who wouldn't know a Colt Single Action Army from a Howitzer if it bit her in the butt.

Oh... and Union Rule #2: any firearm that is not a handgun automatically becomes an Assault Rifle if used in a crime. (hello Laurie Dhue, you brain dead bimbo)
