CLEVELAND, Texas (Army News Service, Sept. 29, 2005) – The Texas National Guard is assisting FEMA with food, ice and water distribution for hurricane victims.

Area residents in Liberty County are still without power after Hurricane Rita ravaged the area Sept. 24.

“There have been people coming through (the food distribution point in Cleveland) who told me they hadn’t eaten in three days,” said Capt. Eric Cox, who was loading cars with food.

Texas National Guardsmen with Task Force Seguin, commanded by Lt. Col. Philip Vaneau from the 149th Fighter Wing in San Antonio, had pre-positioned in College Station before the storm to respond to requests for assistance. The task force is comprised of approximately 400 Army and Air National Guard members from throughout Texas.

One location opened yesterday morning with cars backed up half a mile, said 2nd Lt. Charles Johnson. But by evening there was a steady stream of traffic through the site.

“We’re just glad to help in any way we can,” Lt. Johnson said.

More than 6,000 Natuiobnal Guard and about 1000 active duty forces are supporting Hurricane Rita relief operations.

Personnel from the 82nd Airborne and Marine Corps assisted in the evacutation of about 1,000 people in the past 24 hours in southwestern Louisiana.

(Editor’s note: Maj. Joye Haun is a public affairs officer with Task Force Seguin in Cleveland, Texas.)

I wish they'd head to Winnie Tx. My sister is there. They have been eating sandwiches since Saturday. They are still without electricity and water.

She envy's me that we were eating MRE's.

MRE's, are delicious.

Tell the troops where you are about Winnie Tx, but they send help.

My sister is in Chambers County, the Judge in Anauac, that's the town next to her, said they weren't getting any MRE'S, they have to eat all the sandwiches. An 18 wheeler brought a whole truckload of them in on Saturday, sandwiches that is. They are on dusk till dawn curfew in her town.

She is afraid of the National Guard in her town. She said they are mean and yell at the townspeople.

I'm in Anahuac and the guardsmen I've talked to have all been great. Yes the sandwiches are getting a little old but I'm not complaining, I'm greatfull for all the help we've been getting. My computer is running off my generator which I only run at night. I sure miss FReeping!

She's in Winnie, not Anauac. You can bet the Judge isn't eating week old sandwiches. I told my sister to save a bottle of water, and when election time came around, when she saw the Judge campaiging, to hold up that bottle of water and tell him, 'this cost you one vote.' They are only getting a sandwich and one bottle of water for supper. Three bottles of water isn't enough for them with the heat they're having.

So what's the matter with them, I went to popeyes for dinner tonight. Am I suppose to sit in the dark and wait for the government to provide for me? Any help is greatly appreciated but I can get along just fine without them. I take care of me and mine.

I'm on the phone with my sister now, the Texas State Guard, made them empty their pockets and turn them inside out. They are treating the citizens like criminals. Just to go into the community building in Winnie. She said, they are acting like they are New Oreleans people. They are even checking children.

Now that's uncalled for. Yesterday while waiting in line, I stepped out of my car and went into the court house to ask about water quality. Everyone I met was friendly and cheerful. When getting my rations I told them I was a family of 3, and they gave me extra food water and ice. It was 10 meals for 3 people, the stuff is going to waste.

Saying you went to Popeyes was uncalled for. Why were you bragging that you had the gas and the money to travel twenty five miles for chicken. Aren't you lucky to be able to afford to dine out. Not everyone is that lucky.

Ask Judge Sylvia if he's eating week old sandwiches like the citizens of Chambers County are.

your way off base, to imply that I'm rich because i can buy chicken on my way home from work..
Maybe it's that attitude that gets your people the treatment they deserve.

You must be from the West side because the East side doesn't get rations. They get week old sandwiches.

What's the matter with East Texans? They must live too close to LA. West Texans would be killing some beef and having a community barbeque instead of eating sandwiches for a week. Sheesh...let's show a little gumption here. You don't want to let folks know Texas has whiners, too.

Congratulations on still having your job. There are those who don't know when or if they'll be able to return to their jobs.
