Sad day. I hope he's cleared, but don't know the facts.

“Dollars for Dismissals” - Ronnie Earle dropped charges in exchange for cash to pet cause.

IMHO it's pure vendetta because Tom DeLay has been so effective!

DeLay has issued the following statement:

These charges have no basis in the facts or the law. This is just another example of Ronnie Earle misusing his office for partisan vendettas. Despite the clearly political agenda of this prosecutor, Congressman DeLay has cooperated with officials throughout the entire process. Even in the last two weeks, Ronnie Earle himself had acknowledged publicly that Mr. DeLay was not a target of his investigation. However, as with many of Ronnie Earle's previous partisan investigations, Ronnie Earle refused to let the facts or the law get in the way of his partisan desire to indict a political foe.

This purely political investigation has been marked by illegal grand jury leaks, a fundraising speech by Ronnie Earle for Texas Democrats that inappropriately focused on the investigation, misuse of his office for partisan purposes, and extortion of money for Earle's pet projects from corporations in exchange for dismissing indictments he brought against them. Ronnie Earle's previous misuse of his office has resulted in failed prosecutions and we trust his partisan grandstanding will strike out again, as it should.

Ronnie Earle's 1994 indictment against Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was quickly dismissed and his charges in the 1980s against former Attorney General Jim Mattox-another political foe of Earle-fell apart at trial.

We regret the people of Texas will once again have their taxpayer dollars wasted on Ronnie Earle's pursuit of headlines and political paybacks. Ronnie Earle began this investigation in 2002, after the Democrat Party lost the Texas state legislature to Republicans. For three years and through numerous grand juries, Ronnie Earle has tried to manufacture charges against Republicans involved in winning those elections using arcane statutes never before utilized in a case in the state. This indictment is nothing more than prosecutorial retribution by a partisan Democrat.

A blind man could have seen this coming. A totally political attack by a crooked RAT, and the MSM will love it. DeLay will be totally cleared, but the MSM will barely mention that part.

DeLay and his associates insisted the corporate money was legally spent on committee overhead or issue advertising and not campaign-related activity.

Boy... the line between those two activities is as vague as the meaning of the word "is".

As a former Texan (please Texans help me out here), I know that Ronnie Earle, the dim DA in liberal Travis County - been there for 18-20 years I believe - has traditionally used his office to file spurious charges against pub pols - mostly they end up amounting to nothing. Just fishing, trying to make trouble etc.

As the DA of the county that contains the state capital, Earle has way too much power and he abuses it.

Hopefully this will be trial by jury, not trial by msm.
If he is guilty, he should do the time. If he is innocent, the media should lay off.

Kay Bailey Hutchison was indicted by the same prosecutor in 1993 on criminal ethics charges, which she said were politically-motivated by Democrats. She was acquitted in February 1994 when Earle's state prosecutors, disheartened by the judge's pre-trial rulings, refused to present their case.

Air tight case has no air.

...let the chips fall where they may and we'll learn the truth. I suspect this is going to be a Raymond "Can You Tell Me Where to Pick Up My Reputation" Donovan witch hunt by a RAT prosecutor...I've always wondered how RATs escape the political process?

Appears the TX Chicken RATS been waiting for this since 2001 when they ran for cover because they didn't want a quorum in the state legislature to plan redistricting, and they blamed their problems on DeLay then.

Payback is painful. DeLay almost singlehandedly locked in the Republican majority in Congess by his redistricting effort in Texas. This is sour grapes for the Dems. More chicken-sh*tted stuff rather competing on the issues.

DeLay is a strongwilled, go for the jugular Republican not a weak-kneed appologetic Republican. That makes him a target.

Drier is a better face for the Republicans anyway. He'll win more votes.

PowerLine's post with Delay's statement reveals another pathetic partisan attack by Earle...

"The team includes defense attorneys Bill White and Steve Brittain of Austin and Dick DeGuerin of Houston. "

Let me tell you something. These guys are better than the O.J. "Dream Team". Ronnie Earl has almost zero chance of winning this.
