'Gang of 14' backing Roberts
The Washington Times ^ | 28 September 2005 | Charles Hurt

The "Gang of 14" senators who brokered the end to judicial filibusters has so far stuck together in unanimously supporting the nomination of federal Judge John G. Roberts Jr. to be the next Supreme Court chief justice.

That stamp of approval, Republican leaders say, paves the way for a smoother confirmation of the next Supreme Court nominee.

"The process has been handled very well," Majority Whip Mitch McConnell told reporters yesterday. "The outcome will be largely bipartisan. I think that's very good for the Senate, because in many ways the Senate itself was on trial here."

Specifically, Republican leaders say, the comfortable approval of Judge Roberts means the next nominee should be confirmed without answering specific questions on personal opinions about abortion and other hot-button political issues. Republicans call it the "Ginsburg precedent" for sitting Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose support for abortion rights was very clear but who -- like Judge Roberts -- repeatedly declined to answer specific questions during her confirmation hearing.

My count is 72 for 16 against so far. He deserves 100 votes but this makes the Dems look bad, not CHIEF JUSTICE Roberts.

Yeah, many Republicans still voted for her despite. Ginsburg was and still is a intellectual lightweight and a dingbat. Judge Roberts' level of intellect is way up there, it's in the stratosphere. The comparison between the two is no contest.

Just the opposite. It paves the way for the Gang of 14 to say, "See? We voted for Roberts. We're reasonable men. But this new nomination is too far to the right and represents an extraordinary circumstance. Filibuster!"

"Ginsburg was, and still is an intellectual lightweight"

Yeah, the severe hair style and oversized eye glasses are props, meant to give the appearance of intellectualism...
She realizes that if she can't actually play the part, she must at least look the part.
What a sad human being.......

Did Ginsburg sit on a circuit court?

Seems to me she came from the DC Circuit, which is basically a "farm team" for the USSC in most cases.

Fine. They'll be wasting our time and dollars in the coming weeks stamping their little cloven hooves and pulling out their (remaining) hair over President Bush's next pick.

Count on it like mosquitoes in July. (Well, not down under by you Aussie Dasher, LOL!)
