What struck me during the post-Katrina scenario was the almost total absence of local police and firefighters. But the MSM barely mentioned that once they became fixated on the Bush-blew-it storyline.

He was Insurance Commissioner.......been a couple of insurance commissioners go to prison.
Of course, it is a nice Federal Prison and not one of the state prisons.

I hadn't heard this...but it explains a lot of things. Have the suicides of the two New Orleans police officers actually been investigated & confirmed as suicides? Especially, that of the high level public relations officer? Maybe I've been watching too much CSI lately, but the one officer who left a wife & close relatives behind...that just seemed odd. How very sad for all involved. And I'm disappointed in Compass, too...he seemed a caring voice of reason in the midst of chaos... I even supported the "Vegas Vacations" for his men...and argued with my husband about it (who seemed to think that since he didn't get a paid vacation coming back from deployment that the Police Officers could toughen up a bit...he did concede that he at least had an intact home to come back to...although hurricane season has a few weeks left so...that could change I suppose....). I hope the New Orleans police who went about doing their jobs are not lumped in with the corruption...

What's funny (this includes Fox btw), is everytime I hear cops missing it goes down as opposed to the beginning. Coincidence, I think not.

You're not deep in the Hurtgen Forest are you? If not, this should be good.

"There's about 500 that haven't been accounted for," the chief responds. "Whether they have quit, whether they have perished in the storm. Whether they're with loved ones
E.T. please phone home! Well, you moron, obviously if you HAD these police officers and if you HAD established a department with high morale and skills they WOULD have all checked in by now. Gee, wonder if the military has this problem???

"New Orleans now claims one of the fastest dropping crime rates in the nation despite a recent upsurge in murders."
Sounds like a line from a Simpson's script. Imagine Kent Brockman reading that line.
To: Steve_Seattle
If Tony has it, believe me he has triple-checked it... it's in the bank. All we have to worry about is evidence disappearing.

"you going to vote dem because of the Pubs spending??..prob not..."
No way I vote Dem'Rat however we need to hold the GOP accountable when it strays off course. Like Reagan siad, "trust but verify". We police our own and GOP survives and is better for it.

I don't know about you but I'm not cracking ANYTHING open in San Francisco. It used to be known as Baghdad by the Bay.
Yeah, many (and I mean many) years ago we started a tiny family business in partnership with someone there. Couldn't seem to get a permit approved by the Fire Department. Then our partner finally wised up that the fire department guy had a swimming pool in his backyard and needed a supply of items for it........the approval came through. Stinks.

Compass had to know. Maybe in a huge police force like New York City's lower officials in "Personnel" could hide some ghosts, but 15-30% in a "force" of about 1,500? Hard to believe. If Compass knew, his behavior is doubly condemnable. He's been crying poor-mouth over officers' wages and calling for a fatter budget so he could afford to hire another 100 - 150 officers. Looks like he might've had an adequate budget all along.
He struck me as a straight shooter, too - one of the first things he did when he replaced Pennington was get rid of all the department-owned Blackberrys (he referred to them as "crackberries" because some of the officers seemed to be addicted to the "free" wireless service).
Compass came up through the ranks, working as a patrolman in some of the city's worst neighborhoods. Nagin held the superintendent's job for Compass while he completed his graduate degree in Criminal Justice. It seems that somehow, Nagin wanted Compass in there all along. Now we'll find out why.

The "phantom officers" story might not be true, only one radio talk show has said it...and you know how reliable they are...
