Maybe he's a crook but he's not responsible for the lies. Those lies came from rumors from people within the Dome who thought they were true, and messaged them out. The media followed.

Check every thread here at FR at the time. It wasn't "Compass said..." but reports from within the Dome

Compass was spreading the lies along with everyone else. I .

From the L.A. Times:

Nagin and Police Chief Eddie Compass appeared on "Oprah" a few days after trouble at the Superdome had peaked.

Compass told of "the little babies getting raped" at the Superdome. And Nagin made his claim about hooligans raping and killing.

"The superintendent would be able to calculate at what level various stations are manned based on payroll. Surely, he would have smelled something funny?"

I'm talking about Nagin.

Compass had to know. Maybe in a huge police force like New York City's lower officials in "Personnel" could hide some ghosts, but 15-30% in a "force" of about 1,500? Hard to believe.

I don't remember if Compass said anything about the missing officers, but Nagin and officers on duty interviewed sure sounded like they believed the reports of hundreds missing.

Pretty easy to have those 100,000 police officers that Clinton called for when it looks like quite a few of them don't even exist.

Kinda akin to democrat voters......

Obviously there's a racist element to it too,

I don't follow this comment. So far, the only racism I have noticed has been from the professional race-baiters (Jackson, Sharpton, et al). You are not saying that Nagin is doing a fantastic job and he's a victim of white racism are you?

Nagin is not the bad guy in this.

He is the one that got 'stuck' with the responsibility, and found out late in the game that all the 'plans' had been compromised by the theives above him, leading all the way back to HILLARY and BILL.

Well, I am not here to defend Nagin's incompetence, because he is. But, to be fair, he has given a good share of criticism to Blanco and Landrieu.

He was a Republican shortly before before being elected, but knew he couldn't win except on the Dem ticket.

ANyone know how Tony Snow broke this story? Did someone in the FBI tell him or how did he discover it.

Let's ask him. He might just answer something, maybe not exactly how, but he might tell us something..... :-)

My cocktail napkin guess:

450 Cops * $35k/yr Average = Somewhere in excess of $15 Million per year!

Yeah, but think how much they saved on health insurance! Of course, I'd want to audit the health insurance records - likely insured by a shell for large profit. Don't forget retirement benefits, either.

But it's worse than that. From what I heard, if you wanted a hit done in New Orleans, just ask a cop. Price quoted was $500. At the time, cop salaries in New Orleans were under $10K. Mid-to-late eighties, a very low salary. But someone else can verify. Plus I'm sure they had the Louisiana kickback. Cash the check and kick back 20-80%.

If you want to launder a lot of money, is there a better place than Vegas? Not in the U.S. that I know.

Nagin's the big mouth who "called out" the federal government at "high noon". That's just not smart.

This is how the demodimwits "take care" of the poor folks in inner cities... Well, the poor citizens in these areas deserve better.

Message to the poor: Get thee to the GOP! We genuinely care about you and we want to help you help yourselves and take responsibility for your own destiny. You are not pawns in our eyes.

Yeah, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu.
You noticed how you never heard anything from him?

"In the annals of history, no police department in the history of the world was asked to do what we (were) asked"

Truer words were never spoken.

For years to come, we will ponder why they were asked by the Mayor if they'd like a paid vacation to Vegas right after the worst United States natural disaster in a lifetime.

Sorry, I am not buying that Nagin is anything other than a player in all this. He might be a light player, but anyone who runs for office in NO or LA knows the score. They may not say it in public, but they know.

Corruption is a way of life there, it has been since way befor Huey and The Boys in Baton Rouge.

Nagin may get to be the fall guy, but I doubt it- someone had to be protecting him all along or he would never have been elected.

Compass should have been more circumspect. By the way there has been no doubt shed that women were raped inside the Dome and I've seen more than a few first person reports from women stating they were molested and one who saw a rape in the Dome. Not rumors.

For all I know Nagin was talking about the city as a whole. The murders are true, as reported by coroners. I assume the rapes were true too.
