My major complaints with the GOP are Bush's spending, and the stonewalling RINOs in Congress. And yet, what is the alternative? To vote Democrat? Or to not vote at all - which is just as helpful to Dems.
Every time I think how disappointed I am with Bush, I try to remember how much worse it could be with a legitmate Bush-hater.
The Democrats won't cut spending. They'll raise taxes. We'll see national health care. A Democratic President won't nominate moderate SCOTUS justices - unless you consider Ruth Bader Ginsberg a moderate. We'll cow tow to the UN, probably pull out of Iraq, establish relations with Cuba and Hugo Chavez. They'll be no legitimate challenge to the ban on partial birth abortion. This fall, an upcoming SCOTUS case will be whether a minor has a right to have an abortion without parental consent. If a 15 year old child wins that 'right', do you honestly expect ANY leader from the party of Planned Parenthood to challenge it?
You think gas prices are high now? Wait until you see prices caps imposed, Jimmy Carter-style, so you'll have higher prices and longer lines. We'll have a president that preaches to us the value of sacrifice, which as we all know, worked so well during the Carter years.
As disgusted as we are with George W. Bush, we can't give up on the Republican Party.
You can blame "W" for not using the veto to get the spending run away in order. He has the hammer and he isn't using it. Big government appears to be what he supports. The is little difference between him and Bill Clinton and any differences they have are discussed over coffee at the elder Bush's vacation home.
"...usually makes excellent personell choices.....sometimes his personell choices might fail to live up to his expectations". So he's really, really good, except when he's not so good? And I assume Gen. Myers niece/Chertoff's aide's new wife is gonna make a crackerjack head of Immigration?
I'm not disgusted with Bush.
I don't agree with every single thing he's done but generally I think he is a great leader and I admire him.
Are they just not listening, or are we just not yelling loud enough yet?
I can't imagine anyone who calls themselves a Republican or a Conservative is calling their reps and asking for bigger government, more pork barrel spending, or open borders, to name just a few bones of contention among those of us who frequent this site, as well as many who never heard of Free Republic.
So, the problem must be that they are taking their marching orders from somebody besides us Conservative Republicans.
Politics as usual, in other words. How long can we continue to afford to support this arrangement?
Agreed.
Tax cuts are great, but if they're not balanced with some significanat level of spending cuts the door is left wide open for a future Democratic president to turn around and raise taxes. That's what happened when Clinton got into office. Reagan handed Bush41 a solid economy, historically low tax rates, reduced non-defense related discretionary spending and reduced spending on social welfare and entitlement programs. Bush43 raised income taxes and increased spending across the board. Deficits skyrocketed. When Clinton came into office the country was primed for signiciant tax increases. The Bush43 tax cuts were needed just to offset the Clinton tax hikes. Its an evil cycle and it could happen again.
No.
Not if you can't imagine God ever using you for anything.
Perot?
"What Is The Alternative?"
There is no alternative. None.
Why don't we wait and see. It wouldn't surprise me if she did a good job.
To those who repeat the same old "wasted vote" mantra,no vote is wasted,if you vote.
I'd just as soon you didn't.
Find out who the party machine is backing in the primary and vote for the other guy.
Boy, has this old horse has been beaten on FR so many times in the past it makes my head swim. I've heard all the arguments on every possible side of this debate. But be my guest for the 1000th airing of this one.
Excellent personnel choices? Like putting Michael Brown at the head of FEMA? There were far more eminently qualified Republicans to do that job.
In fact, it now appears that human nature is so constituted that, as in the days of empire all roads led to Rome; in the heyday of liberal democracy, all roads lead to slavery. And we no longer find slavery abhorrent. We embrace it. We demand more. Big government is not just the opiate of the masses. It is the opiate. The drug of choice for multinational corporations and single moms; for regulated industries and rugged Midwestern farmers and militant senior citizens.Guess who? Do click the link and read.It is my thesis today that the sheer tenacity of the collectivist impulse -- whether you call it socialism or communism or altruism -- has changed not only the meaning of our words, but the meaning of the Constitution, and the character of our people.
Government is the only enterprise in the world which expands in size when its failures increase. ...
"we can't give up on the Republican Party."
True....however we need BIGTIME reformation in the GOP. Out with the spineless RINO's and in with true blue man up guts conservatives across the board.
And I am sure President Hillary would send you a nice thank-you.
Michael Brown was competent at his job and handled the hurricanes in 2004 with alacrity and competence.
Brown's efforts to mitigate the disaster in Louisiana were blocked and sabotaged by the incompetence of the local leadership, the lack of preparedness of the local first responders, and the deterioration of the infrastructure due to hurricane damage impeded the response.
Nobody complained here about Brown's management of the previously unprecedented devastation by the hurricanes in 2004. With Katrina - the demands on the Federal response overwhelmed the Federal preparation because local preparation was not up to par with the states that are used to being hit by natural disasters, and the information that the Feds were working from was being provided by people like Blanco and Nagin who were intent on covering their butts.
