You can blame "W" for not using the veto to get the spending run away in order. He has the hammer and he isn't using it. Big government appears to be what he supports. The is little difference between him and Bill Clinton and any differences they have are discussed over coffee at the elder Bush's vacation home.

"...usually makes excellent personell choices.....sometimes his personell choices might fail to live up to his expectations". So he's really, really good, except when he's not so good? And I assume Gen. Myers niece/Chertoff's aide's new wife is gonna make a crackerjack head of Immigration?

As disgusted as we are with George W. Bush, we can't give up on the Republican Party.

I'm not disgusted with Bush.
I don't agree with every single thing he's done but generally I think he is a great leader and I admire him.

Are they just not listening, or are we just not yelling loud enough yet?

I can't imagine anyone who calls themselves a Republican or a Conservative is calling their reps and asking for bigger government, more pork barrel spending, or open borders, to name just a few bones of contention among those of us who frequent this site, as well as many who never heard of Free Republic.

So, the problem must be that they are taking their marching orders from somebody besides us Conservative Republicans.

Politics as usual, in other words. How long can we continue to afford to support this arrangement?

>>>>The spending going on is OBSCENE.

Agreed.

Tax cuts are great, but if they're not balanced with some significanat level of spending cuts the door is left wide open for a future Democratic president to turn around and raise taxes. That's what happened when Clinton got into office. Reagan handed Bush41 a solid economy, historically low tax rates, reduced non-defense related discretionary spending and reduced spending on social welfare and entitlement programs. Bush43 raised income taxes and increased spending across the board. Deficits skyrocketed. When Clinton came into office the country was primed for signiciant tax increases. The Bush43 tax cuts were needed just to offset the Clinton tax hikes. Its an evil cycle and it could happen again.

"God put him in the White House". Well damn, I guess I don't need to vote any more, huh?

No.
Not if you can't imagine God ever using you for anything.

We wouldn't win but we would send a strong message if that crackpot party suddenly got tens of millions of votes.

Perot?

The two parties need a wake up call, the only third party I would consider voting for is the Constitution Party

To those who repeat the same old "wasted vote" mantra,no vote is wasted,if you vote.

Excellent personnel choices? Like putting Michael Brown at the head of FEMA? There were far more eminently qualified Republicans to do that job.

In fact, it now appears that human nature is so constituted that, as in the days of empire all roads led to Rome; in the heyday of liberal democracy, all roads lead to slavery. And we no longer find slavery abhorrent. We embrace it. We demand more. Big government is not just the opiate of the masses. It is the opiate. The drug of choice for multinational corporations and single moms; for regulated industries and rugged Midwestern farmers and militant senior citizens.

It is my thesis today that the sheer tenacity of the collectivist impulse -- whether you call it socialism or communism or altruism -- has changed not only the meaning of our words, but the meaning of the Constitution, and the character of our people.

Government is the only enterprise in the world which expands in size when its failures increase. ...

Michael Brown was competent at his job and handled the hurricanes in 2004 with alacrity and competence.

Brown's efforts to mitigate the disaster in Louisiana were blocked and sabotaged by the incompetence of the local leadership, the lack of preparedness of the local first responders, and the deterioration of the infrastructure due to hurricane damage impeded the response.

Nobody complained here about Brown's management of the previously unprecedented devastation by the hurricanes in 2004. With Katrina - the demands on the Federal response overwhelmed the Federal preparation because local preparation was not up to par with the states that are used to being hit by natural disasters, and the information that the Feds were working from was being provided by people like Blanco and Nagin who were intent on covering their butts.
