You can blame "W" for not using the veto to get the spending run away in order. He has the hammer and he isn't using it. Big government appears to be what he supports. The is little difference between him and Bill Clinton and any differences they have are discussed over coffee at the elder Bush's vacation home.

I'm not disgusted with Bush.
I don't agree with every single thing he's done but generally I think he is a great leader and I admire him.
Are they just not listening, or are we just not yelling loud enough yet?
I can't imagine anyone who calls themselves a Republican or a Conservative is calling their reps and asking for bigger government, more pork barrel spending, or open borders, to name just a few bones of contention among those of us who frequent this site, as well as many who never heard of Free Republic.
So, the problem must be that they are taking their marching orders from somebody besides us Conservative Republicans.
Politics as usual, in other words. How long can we continue to afford to support this arrangement?

Tax cuts are great, but if they're not balanced with some significanat level of spending cuts the door is left wide open for a future Democratic president to turn around and raise taxes. That's what happened when Clinton got into office. Reagan handed Bush41 a solid economy, historically low tax rates, reduced non-defense related discretionary spending and reduced spending on social welfare and entitlement programs. Bush43 raised income taxes and increased spending across the board. Deficits skyrocketed. When Clinton came into office the country was primed for signiciant tax increases. The Bush43 tax cuts were needed just to offset the Clinton tax hikes. Its an evil cycle and it could happen again.

Michael Brown was competent at his job and handled the hurricanes in 2004 with alacrity and competence.
Brown's efforts to mitigate the disaster in Louisiana were blocked and sabotaged by the incompetence of the local leadership, the lack of preparedness of the local first responders, and the deterioration of the infrastructure due to hurricane damage impeded the response.
Nobody complained here about Brown's management of the previously unprecedented devastation by the hurricanes in 2004. With Katrina - the demands on the Federal response overwhelmed the Federal preparation because local preparation was not up to par with the states that are used to being hit by natural disasters, and the information that the Feds were working from was being provided by people like Blanco and Nagin who were intent on covering their butts.
