September 26, 2005--Most Americans (54%) believe that withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq will make things worse in that troubled nation. A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 20% disagree and say that troop withdrawal will make things better.
Republicans, by a 78% to 10% margin, say that withdrawing troops from Iraq would make things worse in that county. Democrats are evenly divided on the question, with 30% of Harry Reid's party saying the troop withdrawal would make things better and 33% taking the opposite view.
As for those not affiliated with either major party, 49% say withdrawing troops now would make the situation worse. Twenty percent (20%) of unaffiliateds say bringing U.S. troops home would improve the situation in Iraq.
A measure of the country's polarization concerning Iraq is that Republicans overwhelmingly view the U.S. troops as a liberating army. Democrats, by a 2-to-1 margin, see the U.S. forces as an occupying army. Unaffiliateds are evenly divided.
Overall, 35% say that the U.S. forces in Iraq are an occupying force. Forty-four percent (44%) view them as a liberating force.
Forty-seven percent (47%) of Americans say that it is more important to get U.S. troops home than to "insure that Iraq becomes a peaceful nation enjoying the benefits of freedom and democracy." Forty-three percent (43%) view finishing the mission as more important than bringing home the troops.
On this question, there is a significant gender gap. By a 50% to 42% margin, men say that finishing the mission is more important. By a 51% to 38% margin, women say bringing the troops home is more important.
Forty-three percent (43%) of Americans say that the War in Iraq is part of the War on Terror. Forty percent (40%) take the opposite view and say Iraq is a distraction from the War on Terror.
A related survey found that 40% of Americans believe the U.S. and its allies are winning the War on Terror. Thirty-six percent (36%) believe the terrorists are winning.
Cindy Sheehan, a featured speaker at Saturday's anti-War protests in Washington, is viewed favorably by 31% of Americans.
so 54% have a clue
and the 31% who favor the Shithead Sheehan are "Stuck on Stupid!"
what else is new? LOL
So, that means 69% don't. So much for the MSM's little darling.
Just 54%? It's not rocket science. Only 5% more for the enemy of this country and we are screwed.
54% have a clue; 46% want to see GWB fail at anything and everything he does.
Now that is what I'd call a "significant gender gap" ;>)

Or a man trying to be a women.
This is not a war for Oil! This is not a war against communist ideology. This is a WAR for freedom of thought!
Not really.
Why are polls conducted among those who know nothing about the subject ?
The pollsters are only sampling "feelings" on the subject.
Useful ? Actionable ? only if your biz is spin.
Exactly!
I'd like to see a poll on this subject taken among experts in the field. I'll bet those who actually know what is going on are overwhelmingly in favor or this part of the War on Terror.
I am certainly a supporter of the war. However, I question that this is a war for the "freedom of thought". I think that many Americans, and many Freepers, are going to be uncomfortable with many of the features of the new Iraqi regime. One of these features is probably less "freedom of thought" than we enjoy, ourselves.
That being said, we should gird ourselves for the next assault by the left. Clearly, as soon as the U.S. completely withdraws from Iraq, they will see it as their duty to denigrate the regime that is left in place of Saddam Hussein. The left will expend a lot of energy espousing the shortcomings of the Iraqi government which is in place and will find fault with it. Unfortunately, because of the culture of the Middle East and Islam, there are likely to be disparities between what the Iraqi government is and what we would "like" to see.
Note, that this is the same "left" that sees beauty in all types of diversity as long as it occurs in Venezuela, Cuba, or all the other cesspools supported by the left. But their allegiance to diversity will not sway them from mercilessly criticizing the Iraqi government, no matter what form it takes. After all, George Bush can't be tarred and feathered if Iraq is seen as a success story!
Rush had a couple of these on his show today. Too much fun.
My comment "freedom of thought" was not directed at what the Iraqi's eventually choose, but at their freedom to make the choice!
Well, I'll be!!!!
I was being sarcastic. 50% of males say we should stay, 51% of females say we should go, not a very big difference given the nurturing aspect of females. Polls you have to love them.;>)
This was always the right way to frame the issue.
There are really two questions:
1) Will US leaving now make Iraq worse off?
2) Is Iraq being worse off in the national security interest?
I want to see the poll result to these questions.
Any other poll is simply a rigged liberal MSM poll targeted to drag Bush down.
