NEW ORLEANS Even with new floodwaters lapping at the high-water marks set by Katrina less than a month ago, Mayor Ray Nagin pushed a plan to bring people back to storm-ravaged New Orleans soon is possible.
Federal officials said Saturday it will take two to three weeks to pump out floodwaters created by Hurricane Rita. The water poured in through levees that were patched after Hurricane Katrina.

he is beyond stuck on stupid.
and so is the Governor.
"Maybe he's afraid the people WON'T WANT to come back."
Maybe that's why he was so reluctant for them to evacuate. "Hard to keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paree'"
Aw come on you guys, he's lonely and also an idiot.
No the "Gov" want $31 or $34 Billion to "fix" LA after Katerina/Rita.
They refused to leave - stating that they would stay with their fellow Londoners. This is one of the things that endeared the elder Windsors to the British people.

Well, there's class and then there's ignorance and stupidity.
always with their hand out. Not enough other people suffered from the hurricanes too. Blanco couldn't do it right from the beginning nor could Nagin and now that it's over after Bush took over and got it fixed with Honore and Allen...all of a sudden Blanco is gonna play big time and ask for money to rebuild. She's so beyond pathetic.
Yes. We just had a NOLA woman thanking the people of Colorado Springs this morning for all they have done and for being so kind and generous. Maybe some of the families that have been reloacted will see for themselves there are other people in the world who do not hate them
The mayor rented/leased a house in Dallas, where his children can start school. That's want he said in a news conference.
Apparently, his wife's brother lives in Dallas. I imagine that his wife has refused to return until their place is inhabitable.
Nagin himself has been staying in a high-rise hotel in New Orleans. I guess he is getting lonely and wants his constituency to "come on down." He wants assurance that HE IS STILL THE MAYOR.
He is so out-of-touch that he thinks the citizens can afford, like him, to put their families up in another place, leave them, and return to N.O. where they can pay to stay in a nice, clean hotel, while they work to cleanup and rebuild the city.
He is a piece of work.
Do any of you that this attitude is typical of the "State" of LA and the "city" of NO?
Not me. Don't know anything at all about New Orleans except hearing about the Mardi Gras every year with young women hoisting up their shirts and trampling on their self respect for some stupid beads. Doesn't take much to please some I guess.

Hey RayGin, think ya could wait until the upstream flooding from Rita has at least subsided if not until after hurricane season?
How transparent can this guy be? Think his "constituents" know he's thinking only of his power base and not their well-being?
I guess this is a good example of "follow the money."
Nagin is not getting any money, so he wants people to return (regardless of how miserable it will be for them) so he can extort money from the Feds -- for the people, don't you know!
What's a king with no subjects? He might have to get a real job.
There was a hospital president testifying before Congress that he was losing a half million a day. If he didn't get a subsidy he would let employees go. Nagin is not the only one who needs money to stay in biz. But they need to adapt, not get bail outs.
So what? If it is safe to return and they have power and water let 'em back in. Am I missing something?
