Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

The noise level in this thread is off the charts!
11:30 PM - The office is receiving numerous phone calls from people who didn't leave before the storm, asking if it's okay to leave now. PLEASE stay sheltered in place at this time...it's far too dangerous outside and on the roads!!
I cant find a source...it was being moved out of the way when the cable snapped...they are tracking it by transponder
WHere are they expected the eye to come on shore now?
As long as it's de-mil'ed,....
Yeah.
Brit.
No. I'm a guy and I like Shep okay. I'm an old radio disc jockey war horse and Shep has one of the best broadcast voices I've ever heard.
Expecting 15-20ft in sabine lake and lake calce... however you spell it.
I need to call it a night. Yall stay safe.
Shep just said 2.7 million evacuated the gulf coast area.
==
Even early this morning, they were reporting no motels/hotel room even in Okla (OKC). They were telling people to go on to Kansas; also on to Memphis.
It's Shep LIVE again!!! Woo Hoo!
How does this storm compare to Audrey in 1957? It is going to landfall in almost the exact same place.
Any FReepers in Humble, TX?
A temporary shelter that is serving 400 people who were stranded without gas in the Rita evac is being run just by private people and church members. They served chicken noodle soup for dinner and have oatmeal for breakfast, but need BREAD for lunch tomorrow. Can't use anything like eggs that need to be cooked.
Sorry, I have to keep listening for the location of the shelter--I *think* it's the Humble Civic Center, but not 100% sure. Reporter Cynthia Hunt has been there all day with the evacuees.
What *P's* me off is we taxpayers have poured a bucketfull of money in LA and what did it buy -- casino's, boats, etc... so don't whine about begging for money to fix levees..

I wondered when we'd hear more from the N.O. area - it's like we've been in a N.O. news blackout tonight, since dark.

Growing up in Minnesota, pizza was as ethnic as we ever got!
Major Garrett on the good-guy list.
ROFLMAO!
Ouch! That cause me to hurt myself from laughing so hard.
