Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

1 hour ago they were showing a dairy queen coming part bit by bit in Port Aurthur and that was probably just 50-60 mph winds..TWC crew moved from Port Aurthur down to Gavelston..they're going to get very high winds there soon.

Oh, Shep thinks if he FALLS he will look like a fool. Meanwhile, he's watching for a large metal sign to blow away. He keeps asking his cameraman to watch the sign. I kind of am happy, because if it flies off and decapitates him I don't want to see it.

You're speaking as if it's all over. Port Arthur is in the thick of it right now. We'll see. Way too early to tell for sure.

One you should have kept to yourself.

There are people reading this thread for hope and information, not to see you unburden yourself.

Wonder how that building with the face on it is doing in Galveston? Anyone ever seen it? Seems an old guy wouldn't sell his property to UT but after he died, UT nursing dept. somehow got it. Anyway, a stucco-like sided building was built on the property and his face can be seen on the wall at night. After too much hoppla over it, they sandblasted and re-stuccoed that portion, but heeeee's baaaack! He'll probably be back after Rita too. Woooo, really creepy. Sort of looks like that shadow image of presidents on dollar bills.

The Acadia Parish/Vermillion Parish Tornado Warning is expired by now...

The area affected was West of Kaplan (and a little North).

The city of Crowley is probably the largest nearby city on the East side of the area (but not part of the warning), and Jennings on the West side of the area (the storm cell probably went to the South of Jennings, but only by a few miles...)

For those who know Louisiana Geography...

10:10 P.M. - GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- At least three buildings have caught fire in the historic Strand District of Galveston, Texas.

At least one of the buildings was engulfed by flames whipped higher by strong winds from Hurricane Rita. A fallen electric pole was lying on one of the buildings and was burning.

One of the buildings that caught fire was built in 1905, just after the hurricane that destroyed most of Galveston and killed at least 6,000people.

Yes! Sean said he'd been watching Shep all night, and asked if he let go of the pole was he afraid he'd blow away. Shep starting detailing the strong gusts, and you could fall on your face and look like a fool. LOL
