Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Did they hire those guys? Or maybe they're heading out to go surfing [:>)
If they stayed, that would be criminal to leave any vessels in the path of a storm like this.
---
Is that near the inlet area just to the east of the texas /La border?
Prayers for everyone on the outskirts of this thing, too. Rita's outter bands are packing a lot of water and wind.
I do call it selfish.
I, and my co-worker, are not in a mandatory evacuation zone - she is even further west than I am. My family was prepared to leave Wednesday evening, hearing a Cat 5 was headed our way. We decided we would wait until Thursday evening before making our decision.
Those in the coastal were in more danger than those of us that live inland. If those that lived inland had waited one day, the traffic would not have been as bad as it was.
Thanks a bunch for the update. Appreciate it.
KPLC started generator and transferred power early. Still running. Planned ahead. Engineer discussing details of potential down time. 2-Watt transmitter. Folks are tired!
Play nice.
Didn't ping'er did ya?
I did!
KPLC - Loose barge heading toward I-210 Bridge.
What do you mean by that remark!
Loose barges reported.
He's not, LOL, he works at pMSNBC, they have a couple of dozen viewers.
LOL at you two. ;o)
Stick a sock in it!

- Motion in the 37 minutes since the last fix (I would do the previous 309 pass to get less-screwy numbers, but I had to reboot and misplaced it) - 5 minutes north, 6 minutes west (314 degrees, 7.2 nm/8.3 mi, 11.7 knots/13.5 mph).
- Position relative to Sabine Pass is 20.6 nm/23.7 mi, bearing 321 degrees.
FNC headline says 150mph winds??
Anyone? Misprint?
That's sad, but better there than a more populated area.
