(Fairfax, VA) -- The United States District Court for the Eastern District in Louisiana today sided with the National Rifle Association (NRA) and issued a restraining order to bar further gun confiscations from peaceable and law-abiding victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
This is a significant victory for freedom and for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The courts ruling is instant relief for the victims who now have an effective means of defending themselves from the robbers and rapists that seek to further exploit the remnants of their shattered lives, said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.
Joining LaPierre in hailing the U.S. District Court decision was NRA chief lobbyist Chris W. Cox. This is an important victory. But the battle is not over. The NRA will remedy state emergency statutes in all 50 states, if needed, to ensure that this injustice does not happen again."
The controversy erupted when The New York Times reported, the New Orleans superintendent of police directed that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns and that only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons. ABC News quoted New Orleans deputy police chief, saying, No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons.
The NRA also pledged that it will continue its work to ensure that every single firearm arbitrarily and unlawfully seized under this directive is returned to the rightful law-abiding owner.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is Americas oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
Makes you wonder what the heck that police chief was thinking in his little pea brain that he even had the authority to do "at whim" confiscation of an ENUMERATED individual right. (strict scrutiny and all that)
I am very grateful the NRA jumped into this with a court case, HOWEVER this was shooting fish in a barrel. Not much difficulty.
I hope they DO parlay this into an ACTIVE and AGRESSIVE public education campaign. They should also work WITH police to help the citizens organize for such future law and order emergencies. (perhaps a few less police cars will be looted)
I noticed the write up in the last issue of "Guns". Are you sure that guy isn't kin to you? A really good review.
Adolph Hitler in another time...
He not only robbed the citizens, he deprived them of their civil rights, which brings up an entire other set of criminal charges.
Exactly! Let it serve as a lesson for mayors and sheriffs everywhere. This $#!+ won't fly!
Yep, that would be nice!
I have only seen an electronic copy of the GUNS review sent to me by David Codrea, the GUNS writer. The November GUNS wasn't on the shelf of my local store yet, for some reason. Are you talking about the November GUNS? How's it look?

I cannot argue against what you say. The sheriff really screwed the pooch on this one. I also cannot see how any intrepretation other than an individual right to own firearms was upheld in the Court's decision. Will this decision now be appealed to a higher court?
Good on you...
Da man hizself, Mr. Edwin Compass.
And therein lies the foundation of their ability to violate the constitution. If the LEO's FIRMLY BELIEVED that they would not be going home that day if they violated such a fundamental aspect of this nations constitution, those very same LEO's would have laughed New Orleans Police Superintendent Mr. Edwin Compass right out of the briefing room.
Will it ever come to that? We are on the slope and the "god syndrome" is more and more prevalent among LEO's. Given the constant propaganda of "cop shows" and LEO's that have literally grown up watching them, I would say that at some juncture a "point will need to be made."
Anybody else notice that the White House did NOT initiate, lead or even take part in this fight for liberty?
Bush still hasn't even indicated opposition to the Keno decision in favor of government theft.
Woohoo! Chalk up another victory for the Constitution.

YeeHaw! A rare win for the Constitution of the United States!
When I let my subscriptions expire, I thought Guns & Ammo was the premier gun magazine. Since resubscribing, I thing G&A has gone down a bit, and Shooting Times quite a lot. Guns on the other hand is as good or better than I remember. There is a picture of the Para Ordinance "Colonel" .45 auto on the cover.
Also a test of the Argentine Browning HP. I enjoyed it as I have owned maybe a dozen Brownings in my life and think the Argentine ones are real sleepers. They may not have the Belgian guns finish but in my experience they are even more reliable, if that is possible.
Yep, and I hope they are charged too!
Sure did notice that, and we're still waiting...
The comparison between G&A and GUNS today tells a lot about the current state of the magazine industry. G&A has tremendous market penetration on way more news stands, and pumps out a huge number of monthly copies, most of which are returned and pulped. These numbers are used to pump up their circulation numbers, and ad rates. GUNS is just as good of a magazine today, but without the hyped circulation numbers, and charges much less for ad space.
More and more it is difficult to distinguish between fiction and truth...
