Today Show's Rita Coverage Stirs Ashes of Katrina's Racial Discord: "Were You Afraid You Could Be Left Behind?"
by Mark Finkelstein
September 23, 2005 - 07:23.
In its Katrina coverage, the MSM made hay at President Bush's expense in suggesting that the government's sluggish response was the result of racism.
Given the early and energetic preparations of government at all levels for Rita, you might think that it would impossible for the MSM to recycle the racism canard. But that didn't stop the Today show from giving it the old college try this morning.
Lester Holt normally strikes me as a solid professional. In footage from yesterday aired on this morning's show, Holt reported from Galveston, covering the last of the evacuees, largely poor people it seemed, being put on school buses "who had no other way to leave."
Holt asked what appeared to be a poor black mean sitting on a school bus about to be evacuated: "were you afraid that you could be left behind here?"
The implication was unmistakable, the 'subliminable' message clear: "were you afraid that you could be abandoned here in the same way that people [overwhelmingly black in numbers] were left to fend for themselves at the convention center and elsewhere in New Orleans?"
You can't blame an MSM reporter for trying. Exploiting the racial divide for political gain is what they do.

Good morning, governs. Thay want to go back to the 60s and the Great Society (that worked out well, didn't it)in the worst way and they think they are going to get away with it. It is annoying this morning to see Texas getting no credit for the excellent job they are doing. Instead, all I hear is how the federal government learned its lesson with Katrina. The only thing the federal government did wrong with Katrina was not realize what a completely corrupt and incompetent bunch they had on their hands in Louisiana.
Black + bus = poor? Probably, since there is a black welfare ghetto in Galveston. However, some don't own cars since the island is walkable and many have lived their whole lives in the island never crossing over to the mainland. Better the bus than staying or walking out.
I didn't watch this but what did the man respond to Lester's question?
Of course I didn't see the man's balance sheet, but I concluded he was poor based on a number of factors: dress, speech, hair, etc. Perhaps I was wrong, but if you were to have seen the footage I'd guess you would have agreed with my conclusion.
Further grist for these media racists is the news that a bus carrying the homeless has just exploded and burned on an interstate hwy. 200 miles from Houston, and all lanes are blocked. THAT will undoubtedly be the today's media preoccupation and how to somehow link it pejoratively to President Bush.
The man appeared to be very good-natured. With a smile, almost a laugh, he said 'yes,' as a woman in the background chimed in, in agreement. I got the sense the man was trying to be amiable in response to Holt. He certainly didn't seem to be an angry, anxious person, worried that he came close to being left behind.
Rita has gone to the dark side. She use to be one of the best. Goodbye Rita.
If you are BLACK, Don't turn Back !!
Move To Chicago !!
Jocelyn Wildenstein, Rita Cosby, and Kato Kaelin
This dumb blond?
(The one in the middle)
Not sure, but the Wildenstein look could be a good one for Hillary '08 ;-)
Being East Texas, I am waiting for the race baiters to suggest the evacuation plans include chains attached to bumpers...
When you couple this with Obama's statement yesterday that "...Republicans don't care about black people...", it makes you sick to your stomach.
I guess I don't have to worry...according to Farrakan only black homes will flood.
Do you believe that?!! I almost choked when my peepers beheld that b-b-b-beauty! ;)
I am avoiding the news until all of this hurricaine stuff blows over-no pun intended. I cannot believe how some can take ANY issue and turn it into a racial problem. Natural disasters become racial problems, military enlistment becomes a racial problem, voting becomes a racial problem, comlementing some old man at a birthday party becomes racial, etc. I have had enough of this BS. Until the black leaders really want to lead their "people" to real equality this crap is going to continue and I have decided that I don't have to listen to it.
Any news coverage of whites being affected by the storms, are simply CGI effects directed by Rupert Murdoch, media mogul...
A hurricane once upon a time hit NY. If another were to hit during a Republican-in-office term, the millions who would not be able to subway, fly, drive, track or bus it out of there would be all automatically deemed as "poor" the Prez doesn't care about even though...
(1)Many middle-class and wealthy folks in NY don't own cars;
(2)LBJizing poor folks with free cars isn't going to empower them;
(3) It's not up to the feds to pre-evacuate a city...that's what local and state guvs are for.
Don't hesitate to speak this truth into MSM ears, no matter how seemingly deaf they are to these concepts. If enough people utter them, they'll be forced to learn how to read our lips.
