Bush: Weak terror response led to 9/11
Sep 22, 2005, 19:00 GMT
WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- President Bush said withdrawing from Iraq would be a mistake that would embolden terrorists just as U.S. responses to other attacks led to 9/11 hijackings.
Speaking Thursday at the Pentagon after an update on the war on terror, Bush said a pullback would be seen as weakness and make the United States less safe.
'The terrorists saw our response to the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings in the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole,' Bush said. 'The terrorists concluded that we lacked the courage and character to defend ourselves and so they attacked us.'
It was the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, carried out by al-Qaida operatives, that led Bush to launch the war on terror with an attack on Afghanistan, where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden had been given sanctuary. Bush links the fighting in Iraq with the war on terror.
The president said the plan is to follow a strategy of making political gains in the affected counties, while training local personnel to assume security operations.
Excellent dream.
But alas, only a dream.
World War III began when the World Trade Center was bombed in 1993, but the Clinton administration treated it as a purely criminal case.
None of the terrorists were sentenced to death. Does anyone remember why?
especially "lacked character"
especially "lacked character"
He's a nice addition to the batting lineup, coach.
First I've heard of it; certainly the first time it's been intended as a broadside against the Fellatious First Felon.
FINALLY!
And Iraq was involved in the first World Trade Center bombing, Iraq was involved in the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Kenya, Iraqi Intelligence was involved in 9/11 planning meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Iraq supplied WMD (chemicals) to terrorists in Sudan, Saddam Hussein tried to assassinate Pres. George HW Bush, Saddam Hussein paid "rewards" to terrorist suicide bombers, Saddam Hussein gave the terrorists sanctuary in Iraq after they were run out of Afghanistan.
While the terrorists were attacking U.S. interests around the world, Billy Clinton was getting serviced in the Oval Office. Billy & Hillary undermined the U.S. military and failed to defend the U.S. against its enemies. As George W. Bush has said, the terrorist (with reason) expected the U.S. to roll over and play dead after 9/11 - or perhaps file a law suit in Federal court in San Francisco.
We should do it the other way around. That would make Med ports available for logistics.
What is it Marines say? Hooya!
I think it's most of the armed forces these days, and it's HOOOAH.
They will fail because the terrorists of our century are making the same mistake that the followers of other totalitarian ideologies made in the last century. They believe that democracies are inherently weak and corrupt and can be brought to their knees. They looked at our response after the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings of the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa, and the attack on the USS Cole. They concluded that free societies lack the courage and character to defend themselves against a determined enemy. Hear the words of Osama bin Laden that explain why he believed he could get away with the attacks of September the 11th, 2001: "We've seen in the last decade the decline of the American government and the weakness of the American soldier, who is ready to wage cold wars and unprepared to fight long wars... After a few blows they ran in defeat... [They forgot] about being a world leader..." End quote.

"It appears he took a swipe at Reagan and Carter, too."
Doesn't matter! Reagans dead and Carter...Well, who cares about Carter!
I think his 'aim' was just fine!
Not quite true.
This wasn't a cheap shot like Clinton throws. Primarily his intention is to promote the Truth. This is why he included events under Reagan and Carter that contributed to the terror response of today by our enemies.
But, notice he named one act of Carter. One of Reagan. Numerous under Clinton. he could have chosen one, even two, but the number of instances he cites in the '90's is politically deliberate.
It was a clear, smooth shot at Clinton in part, though not whole.
His comment was right on, just frustrated that its like pulling teeth to get these pols to figure it out. Its like they are always one disaster behind the 8 ball if then.
It would take time to read that -- time better spent calling you names! ;^)
No, he grew a backbone some time ago. Either that or he sprouted wings. :-)
Remember the whole bulge in his suit coat debate?

Wow. Anytime you feel the need to repeat this, please do.
I know a few RINO talk show hosts that need the reminder.
It's about time!
