Extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Rita continues to threaten the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. I just called my son in Austin....

..he;s young, single ....

I told him ...hon, there are thousands of folk heading up to your town....

Go get gas!!!! or there won't be any.

He has 1/2 tank....said he would get s ome in the AM on the way to work.

He hasn't been watching TV all day (as I have & watched the huge snakeline of travelers).., so doesn't realize the huge number of folk leaving Houston for his direction.

It's just hard to stress urgency to young folks sometimes.

I also said 'do you have batteries, flashlight'....

..He said he would get that on the way to work too.

Now, this is an educated young man--really quite sharp.... but he doesn't see the problem as I do!

If things get bad in Dallas, I've got a full tank of gas and my Jeep to get out. :)

Just come up to Plano. They have their own water sources.

To: SE Mom The mayor of Galveston was just on with O'Reilly and the weather guy. They both said Galveston will not be the same after the storm hits. Mayor said that they just built a bunch of homes and condos only 150 feet from the water and that there are no sand dunes between for protection. He looked very worried. He made it sound like Galveston is very much in play for a direct hit.

Those barriers are significantly stronger than they look. Most explosives wouldn't even faze them.

Is that an eyewall replacement cycle?

ERC started early this morning. looks like it is completing. Pretty much right on schedule - ERC's generally take around 12 hours.

Would have been nice to see her a lot weaker at this point though. Many were hoping for 930ish Pressure and 120-130 MPH winds, but it looks like looks like she has held her own. 915 is very capable of supporting a CAT 5, and we may see her strengthen again over night.

The good news is that the coastal waters shouldn't be able to support that strangth and she should back off to a CAT 4 at landfall.

We can all pray for another ERC around that time too, to bring her down even more.

Based on how long she strengthened before getting into this ERC, I am concerned she may end up at best just start getting into the next cycle before she hits land. In other words, if she does indeed strengthen after this cycle ends, and she looks extremely strong for having poor eye structure all day it is sad to say....she may not lose much punch as she hits the coast even if she is hitting waters with less heat potential and starting an ERC. I sure hope I am wrong and she weakens into a cat 2 or so.

This chapter touches me so much because it shows God's powerful hand. I'm posting it just because. If God formed the ocean and the waves, he can surely subside this nasty storm!!

JOB 38
1Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: 2"Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? 3Brace yourself, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. 4"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. 5Do you know how its dimensions were determined and who did the surveying? 6What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone 7as the morning stars sang together and all the angels* shouted for joy? 8"Who defined the boundaries of the sea as it burst from the womb, 9and as I clothed it with clouds and thick darkness? 10For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores. 11I said, `Thus far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!'

My money's on landfall W of Lk Charles to E of Galveston by 11 P.M. Friday. 5 gets ya 7 that if I split the difference she lands on the right half. I'm thinking she's going to come ashore parallel to the coast of LA from Terrabone Bay to Lk Charles, and continue inland along that vector.

What's really interesting, she's gonna claim squatter's rights in Port Aurther. Well, at least until Monday morning (maybe even longer).

Busy tracking back through the AF runs. They had to have taken that one on the way out of their SW-NE run; that's how it slipped past my notice.

ONly way I found it was that someone posted it over on Easternwx.

"I'm fine. I've got plenty of water, an "assault shotgun", some other toys, and the requisite other supplies. If things get bad in Dallas, I've got a full tank of gas and my Jeep to get out. :) "

I have been considering buying a bugout vehicle and have narrowed my choices down to Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Xterra or the new Toyota FJ.

Major changes between the 6:28 pm eye fix and the 7:10 pm eye fix:

- Movement 1 minute north, 6 minutes west
- Pressure up 2 mb to 915 mb
- Max flight-level wind speed down 2 knots to 123 knots, though it is in both the NE and SE quadrants
- Concentric eyes now 17 nm and 32 nm wide (was 16 nm and 35 nm)
- Outer eyewall now open NW (was open W), while inner eyewall verry ragged.

Stick the fork in that inner eyewall.

I missed it worse than that; I attributed that 132-knot speed to the NW quad. D'OH!!!

I knew there had to be a hurricane prayer out there somewhere.

No name on the prayer but it seemed right to put it up now that they have told the folks in Houston that the time to leave is over.

I did that to my niece down in Chapel Hill right before Fran; the whole nine yards; they, of course, blew me off.

When Floyd was heading our way, I opened my back door and found 25 "sisters" from the Zeta house at Carolina. And they all had full tanks of gas, batteries, and cash.

That's a 120 MPH breeze. How long will this buoy last?

I'd say she's lasted; the eye is now to the northwest of the bouy.
