New Orleans descended on New York for two concurrent concerts, dubbed From the Big Apple to the Big Easy, Tuesday night to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Big names such as Dave Matthews, Simon and Garfunkel, and Elton John filled the bills of the shows held at Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden, but New Orleans acts from the Meters to the Neville Brothers were the focus of the evening's entertainment.
Piano player and studio whiz Allen Toussaint led the house band for the first segment of the MSG concert, alongside Late Show With David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer. Together they hosted a rotating panel of guests that included Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Jimmy Buffett and New Orleans soul queen Irma Thomas, who performed her classic "Time Is on My Side," famously covered by the Rolling Stones in 1964. Aaron Neville joined Toussaint for a chilling take on Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," sung against a backdrop of horrific images from flood ravaged New Orleans.
Political chatter was kept to a minimum at both events, with performers mostly sticking to the program: championing aid for New Orleans. But a few artists angrily denounced government officials for their slow response to Katrina's devastation. "I Wish New Orleans was dry and Washington was underwater," said Tom Waits. Bette Midler had even stronger words: "I got a letter from the Republican Party the other day. I wrote back, 'Go "f" yourself.'" She then added, "George Bush is a fan of mine -- he came to see me in the Seventies. His coke dealer brought him."
There was nothing but love for one former Oval Office resident, however: Bill Clinton's surprise appearances at both concerts were greeted with long standing ovations.
Thanks to Bush!
Thanks to Bush!
There's a point of be classy, and a point of being just plain dumb and just asking for it.Bush has far past the classy point.
I sorry to say this, but many American are turning their backs on Bush, because of his lack of response to any/all Democrats claims. His silence and his GOP counterparts our hurting themselves ,the agenda, his presidency, and the 2008 election for not speaking out against the continuing lies!!!
Bush made Clinton the star last night, and Bush the loser!
"Midler's profanity-lace remark will came back to bite the Democrats BIG TIME if the Democrats don't start distancing themselves fast from them."
There is a Jewish saying, "You can tell someone by the company he keeps."
Hollywood was part of the reason I finally left the Democratic party. They were, in a sense, the final nail in the coffin (especially after 9/11).
The Democrats are in VERY big trouble. They are desperately searching for "mainstream" types to give them credibility -or at least make them appear moderate.
Clinton, actors, etc. are all has beens...why respond to someone who does not matter in today's world...all these people are 9/10 PEOPLE. With everything going on in today's world, President Bush does not have the time for these fools. If he responded to everyone who bashes him, he would have no time to take care of the people's business! Remember these are Clinton's people--the 9/10 PEOPLE!
Yuck! Double Yuck!!!!!!
That's how these old have-beens get their few minutes in the spotlight and free publicity. Most people don't remember them, and those who do, think they're dead.
Hey lady I guess you don't know a class act when you see one. Clinton is scum and will always be scum. Let Middler and her kind say all their trash about the President. When it comes down to it they really do nothing for this country and never have. In time they will get what they deserve and it will not be pretty. Bush is doing his job unlike Clinton and history will be kind to W and very unkind to Bubba.
And all true, unlike the fat one's raving nonsense.
I hope your right! It's gets depressing constantly hearing him bashed on a daily basis. Then,he's nice to Clinton!I cannot figure out why??
