Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.
Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.
Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

You're more than welcome.
dawn53 is in Florida.....
What with Rita's hyper-intensification and my getting little sleep over the past couple of days, it feels to me as if a whole week has passed compressed into a 24-hour period.
For perspective, here's that link I like.
This storm is as large as Florida and is quickly becoming as large as the entire state of Texas.

Tampa Bay
Up from 902 or is it apples and oranges?
I keep posting this one, but it has lots of great links:

That's what I thought, but someone said it wasn't a wobbler and it was going WNW.
Speaking of that, here's a post from one of our "Compassionate" liberals from another board....
"Bunch of toothless rednecks with similar DNA. What good are they? Besides, they helped to place pRESIDENT Bush. ****'em. You should be used to this sort of compassion you filthy Pukes."
Loons are out in force again, and I think they are embarrassed by the huge display of COMPETENT response!!
Ok, not Shep. How 'bout Algor?
Did it....
Here is what I wrote..
"Hey Jackass
I know your hate for Bush has fogged your bird brain. Do us all a favor
. Sit down and SHUT UP LEFTIST!"
On a side note, the Ditch Witch will be forced to edit her stump speech to demand withdrawl of our troops "from occupied Iraq, New Orleans AND Houston"
Thats the best side by side iver seen.
What'd they do, watch "The Abyss" one too many times?
Katrina, I believe was 902...but I may be off a few points...Camille which went in at Cat5, had a pressure of 905...
Thunder now....
..I've just returned however, from a nice long walk between the rain bands...
It also bombed out very quickly - I'm hoping it goes crazy and then enters a series of eyewall replacement cycles, and hits the coast during the middle of one of those.
That's about the best hope here - that it'll be a lower-end Cat 4 instead of a Cat 4/5 borderline storm.
Steve, who posted the link with 908mb? That was a comparison line right?
