Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Like that puff of dry air that weakened Katrina from 175mph down to 145-135mph..much help that did, storm surge and the breaking of the N.O. LA. levees....

All since yesterday morning.

What with Rita's hyper-intensification and my getting little sleep over the past couple of days, it feels to me as if a whole week has passed compressed into a 24-hour period.

For perspective, here's that link I like.

This storm is as large as Florida and is quickly becoming as large as the entire state of Texas.

The Gulf isn't big enough to fit a storm the size of Tip. Tip superimposed over the US would cover almost the entire western half! There is no way that the Gulf could support a hurricane that size!

Speaking of that, here's a post from one of our "Compassionate" liberals from another board....

"Bunch of toothless rednecks with similar DNA. What good are they? Besides, they helped to place pRESIDENT Bush. ****'em. You should be used to this sort of compassion you filthy Pukes."

Loons are out in force again, and I think they are embarrassed by the huge display of COMPETENT response!!

On a side note, the Ditch Witch will be forced to edit her stump speech to demand withdrawl of our troops "from occupied Iraq, New Orleans AND Houston"

I'm central Florida east coast, and it's been raining ...hard at times...and overcast all day.

Thunder now....

..I've just returned however, from a nice long walk between the rain bands...

It's narrower - but the windfield diameter is expected to increase.

It also bombed out very quickly - I'm hoping it goes crazy and then enters a series of eyewall replacement cycles, and hits the coast during the middle of one of those.

That's about the best hope here - that it'll be a lower-end Cat 4 instead of a Cat 4/5 borderline storm.
