Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter announced his support yesterday for the nomination of federal Judge John G. Roberts Jr. as Supreme Court chief justice.
"After listening to Judge John Roberts testify for nearly 17 hours and then hearing from 31 witnesses -- some for and some against his nomination -- I have decided to vote to confirm him to be chief justice of the United States," Mr. Specter said in a speech yesterday on the Senate floor.
Although Mr. Specter is the panel's top Republican, his support for the conservative jurist was not a foregone conclusion. The Pennsylvanian often bucks his party and famously opposed the 1987 nomination of Judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court, leading to its eventual demise.
The committee will vote on Judge Roberts' nomination Thursday. Republicans say they expect the vote to follow party lines, although several Democrats maintain that they are still considering the nomination.

does any one have a preliminary head count?
I'll believe it after the votes are cast.
He'd be a damn fool not to...
Roberts really has these guys snowed.
What a guy!

Mr. Specter was quoted as saying he believed that Judge Roberts was very competent in the intricacies of Scottish Law, and that he was therefore qualified to serve on the Supreme Court.
When is the vote?

Specter is not a Republican and the only forgone conclusion is that he probably won't support the President's next choice which is the more crucial one. Specter will lean towards not upsetting the "balance" of the court which of course is pathetically unbalanced if you actually consider the Constitution as a guide. Specter will not IMO support a true Constitutionalist as the next choice.
I sincerely hope that Senator Nelson of Florida votes nay.
It would help us here immensely in 06, but I predict that old Ben knows this, and that he will vote for confirmation.
Oh Arlen, Isn't that just special of you ..."
Specter = Aye
Reid = Nay
Bacus(D-MT) = Yea
Nelson (D-NE) = Yea
He'll vote for Roberts. It's a conservative replacing a conservative so the court status quo is maintained and Specter's precious Roe v. Wade stays intact no matter how Robert votes.
Once Bush selects a pro-life nominee to replace pro-choice O'CONNOR, however, Specter will gear up for BORKIN' TIME!
The back-stabbing RINO is all too predictable.
As often is the case with RINOS.
Yeah, I'd say that's about right. Man, a freaking Republican feels he has to announce to the world that he's actually voting for a nominee from his own party! Unbelievable!
