'Black Tuesday' Continues: 'NYT' Cutting 500 Jobs

By E&P Staff

Published: September 20, 2005 4:37 PM ET

NEW YORK The New York Times Company announced a staggering staff reduction plan Tuesday that will likely mean some 500 job loses at the company's many properties, including an expected 45 newsroom positions at The New York Times newspaper and 35 at The Boston Globe.

In a press release distributed Tuesday afternoon, the company said it "plans to begin the staff reductions in October and implement them over the course of the next six to nine months.

The news followed an announcement earlier in the day from Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., owner of the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer, would seek to cut 100 jobs through buyouts.

The New York Times Company added that about 250 positions at The New York Times Media Group will be affected, including approximately 45 newsroom positions at The Times newspaper. At The New England Media Group, some 160 positions, including those at the Globe, will be lost. The Company's regional newspapers, broadcast outlets, and corporate staff will also be affected, the release said, but did not offer specifics.

"This represents a continuation of the initiatives the Company began earlier this year to find ways to operate more efficiently," a statement with the release said. "As a result of these efforts, the Company identified areas where it could function effectively with fewer people. Earlier this year the Company reduced its staff by approximately 200 positions, or about 2%.

The Company also stated it "plans to manage the staff reductions in such a way that it continues to provide journalism of the highest quality, to function smoothly on a day-to-day basis and to achieve its long-term strategic goals."

"What was most fun was ragging on them when they kept calling trying to get me to come back."

I enjoy the same sport with my local liberal rag paper also. I get to tell them that their editorial positions advocate taking money out of my pocket and that me not subscribing is my way of taking money out of theirs.

Recently, they started sending me solicitations with self-addressed, stamped envelopes. I send them back empty just to make them pay the postage. We'll see how long this lasts.

.....What do they mean "continues"?.....

I read this piece several times to be sure the date was current. I thought the old gray whore laid off a bunch earlier. If so, continuation is correct.

Maybe the Old York Times should try Bashing Bush, that always sells papers. When your business model is to insult 60% of your customers this is the result. FOX Rox is hiring!

I looked it up and on May 25, 2005 there was a layoff of 190 people.

With this cut it becomes nearly 700.

This link says 72,000 media jobs lost since 2000.

Life After Television

In the world of the teleputer, broadcasters, educators, investors, and filmmakers, who thought they could never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people, are going to discover they were wrong.

New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer are probably the most blatantly anti-Bush of the major newspapers. I only read the Times now if it's a freebie at a hotel or airport, or online. I won't pay for their content, and I intentionally avert my eyes at any of their advertisements. Sorry, Punch. You lost me as a customer. Forever.

Thanks for the good news. ;-D This line jumped out at me:

The Company also stated it "plans to manage the staff reductions in such a way that it continues to provide journalism of the highest quality, to function smoothly on a day-to-day basis and to achieve its long-term strategic goals."

"...its long-term strategic goals" must surely include damaging this nation as much as possible, given its America-hating staff. I'd like to see the entire enterprise go down in figurative flames. The paper stinks.

Let's be realistic here. Who are they going to cut? NOT the lunatics who write the news, NOT the executive and editors who control the direction and slant. They will cut those who actually do the work. You will still get the same garbage, written by the same flunkies.

On the bright side, we will see more announcements like this in the future because of it!! LoL!
