NEW YORK The New York Times Company announced a staggering staff reduction plan Tuesday that will likely mean some 500 job loses at the company's many properties, including an expected 45 newsroom positions at The New York Times newspaper and 35 at The Boston Globe.
In a press release distributed Tuesday afternoon, the company said it "plans to begin the staff reductions in October and implement them over the course of the next six to nine months.
The news followed an announcement earlier in the day from Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., owner of the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer, would seek to cut 100 jobs through buyouts.
The New York Times Company added that about 250 positions at The New York Times Media Group will be affected, including approximately 45 newsroom positions at The Times newspaper. At The New England Media Group, some 160 positions, including those at the Globe, will be lost. The Company's regional newspapers, broadcast outlets, and corporate staff will also be affected, the release said, but did not offer specifics.
"This represents a continuation of the initiatives the Company began earlier this year to find ways to operate more efficiently," a statement with the release said. "As a result of these efforts, the Company identified areas where it could function effectively with fewer people. Earlier this year the Company reduced its staff by approximately 200 positions, or about 2%.
The Company also stated it "plans to manage the staff reductions in such a way that it continues to provide journalism of the highest quality, to function smoothly on a day-to-day basis and to achieve its long-term strategic goals."
Found some undercover conservatives on staff?
I read somehwere this week that Krugman makes over $300,000 a year salary.
Why not apply "it takes a village" philosphy and save at least 10 lower level employees at $30,000 per year in exchange for one high salary employee?
Shades of the 80's.
The company is failing?
Fire the guy with the mop!
You can be pretty sure that most of these 500 people are hapless flunkies. The leftists in charge will use their salaries to pay themselves more.
It's like the purge of the Kulaks.
death watch begins. (I'll take first watch).
Beautiful - LOL
My my--the fate of an organization does indeed rest on its hiring policies. Hire liars, lose subscriptions, viewers, customers. Happens every time.
This is truly the sound of Freedom.
It's not like they had real jobs anyway. People who have actual real jobs don't lose them.
I am sure they will find real jobs for their talents like... scaling fish or cleaning cages at the zoo.
This just made my day. What a great story--the seat of journalistic fraud is finally receiving some well-deserved losses.
I don't know if we should refer to them as a mammalian species. They are more like snakes (reptiles) than anything else.
500 ageless hippies just got a cold dose of reality.
"But..what we were doing was so noble honey!!!, I cant take a job with your brother!"
I'm sure their fact-checkers were the first to go.
Varmints or critters for sure, tho...
Hah! Both the New Dork Slimes and the Boston Glob are getting whacked.
"The headline should read "Greedy New York Times to sacrifce 500 middle class jobs to achieve its long-term strategic goals."
Love it. Now, if those 500 middle class folks can figure out what's going on, maybe they'll get a real MSM going!
Maybe they should start charging to read Krugman......roflmao!
