CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 2005--Federated Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE:FD) (PCX:FD) today announced a series of strategic decisions to build its nationwide Macy's and Bloomingdale's brands and reduce costs. These moves will help stimulate long-term growth in sales while taking full advantage of integration opportunities created through the merger of Federated and The May Department Stores Company, which was completed on Aug. 30, 2005.

But Filene's Basement still exists in the Mall of America, doesn't it ?
Same thing here in the Hartford, CT area. We used to have a once very fine department store called "G.Fox". It was gobbled up by Filene's, which is now being re-named Macy's. :-(
The store was originally "M. Rich & Sons" on Forsyth Street in downtown Atlanta. They had a famous clock on the north wall of the store - "meet me at the clock" was a standard rendezvous. We used to go with my grandmother down to Rich's to shop and eat lunch at the Magnolia Room. White gloves and patent leather shoes!
Of course Federated had already extinguished Davison's, our other local department store, 15 years or so ago. It was originally The Davison-Paxon Company - my grandmother had one of the original charge-a-plates with that name on it.
The competition is now between Macy's and Wal-Mart. Nordstroms and Dillards have simply busted Macy's out of the upscale market. The only reason I go in their store at all any more is to hit the clearance racks for my daughter's prom dresses (those are the only good deal left in the place.)
I didn't know there was a Filene's Basement in the Mall of America... never been there. I hope to visit Minnesota one of these years... ;-)
I've still got a Dayton's card. They laughed the last time I visited Marchall Fields in Burnsville.
I consider it a stupid move.
When my wife and I visited Chicago from Los Angeles, we made a point of stopping by Marshal Fields for dinner in the Walnut Room and chocolate.
Tell me who would stop by a Macy's. LOL
Sounds like the last laugh is on them.
Maybe their salesman died.
RIP Marshall Field's.
I remember the Dayton's store in Minneapolis too; however, there is one "Dayton" I will not be sad to see leave the scene, as in Senator Mark Dayton, D MN!!!
Dayton has taken on that same look James Taylor had when they let him out of the booby hatch a few years ago.
In Atlanta we had "Riches Department Store". Riches had quite a history in the city. It also provided much needed competition between the big name department stores. Federated then bought them out. Just a few months ago the Riches name was replaced with Macy's. Very sad.
Same here in Cincinnati/Columbus. Lazarus was a department store here in Ohio that had been around a LONG time. Now it is Macy's, but we still refer to the stores as "Lazarus" stores, and we always will!

We must be roughly the same age... I have similar memories as a little girl! :o)
(except in NYC and Hartford, CT instead of Atlanta)
Imagine dressing up like that just to shop or have lunch in a nice restaurant today... those days are gone forever... *sigh*
Maybe it's just me, but I can't get past the current logo of (conglomerate) Macy's: a Red star. Reminds me too much of Communist USSR. (tho I did purchase a very nice handmade quilt that would have been $150 for $35.)
Yes, it's hard to keep up. I've lived in both Chicago and the Detroit area (grew up here), so it wasn't as hard to see "Hudson's" change to Marshall Field's. Always thought "Field's" would be around forever. Sad to see the big guys taking over.
Marshall Field's may safely disappear now without affecting the make-believe world of shopping where the goods appear magically without being touched by hand and make the buyer the envy of the neighborhood. Too bad the technical expertise of corporate advertisers can't be turned to the destruction of terrorism.
It was hard to find. Down in the basement, I think.
