New Orleans' Nagin says Adm. Allen 'stepped outside his lane'

NEW ORLEANS - After backing off on his call for some residents to return to New Orleans, the city's mayor ripped into the top U.S. government relief official on Tuesday, underscoring the rising tension between city and federal authorities over who has the final say after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina....

The call for another evacuation ahead of a new tropical storm came after repeated warnings from top federal officials — including President Bush himself — that New Orleans was not safe enough to reopen. Federal officials warned that Tropical Storm Rita could breach the city’s weakened levees and swamp the city all over again.

"Let's just hope the citizens of N.O. are WISE ENOUGH to get rid of this incompetent liberal loser"

I doubt if they are. What will probably end his reign though will be the changed demographics.

From my dictionary: nag 1. to annoy by continual scolding, faultfinding, etc. ; 2. to keep troubling.

Also, nag an inferior horse, esp. an old one.

Ragin Nagin.

Don't agree. Man gets caught in FBI sting, on tape, and his constiutents believe it is all a lie. Pretty gullible people IMO. Information deficit disorder seems to be a malady of yours as well. We shall simply have to agree to disagree.

On Tuesday, Nagin had harsh words for the federal government’s top official in the city, Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen, who he said “stepped outside his lane by talking directly to the citizens of New Orleans.”

“I respect what federal officials are doing down here, but they do not fully comprehend what it’s like to lose your home, to lose everything and not know and to be sitting out there for three weeks. So I think it’s important for people to come back and at least take a look,” Nagin said on NBC’s “Today” show.

I'd tell the mayor, "Must be easy for you now that you have a house Dallas and your kids enrolled in Dallas schools. Why aren't you living here yet? But hey go ahead! When you get all your school buses up and running, go pick them up yourself!"

Yes it is politics, but I wonder if Texas can absorb 250,000 new voters who normally vote democratic. Not sure if Texas would stay a Red state with adding that many new voters to the books. What about all the other states who took on a huge population. The next round of voting could be interesting.

Trouble for Nagin is, Adm. Allen is competent, and the comparison to Mayor Mookie is not flattering.

Well you are completely uninformed. It seems that Nagin was inviting FBI stings to come in and root out corruption. Don't let any facts get in the way of your prejudices!

One of our NC FReepers suggested on the State Board that if the population of N.O. spends a couple of seasons away from the southern climate they wouldn't be able to tolerate the humidity of the city again.

He needs money. The city is broke.

The N.O. tax base, and the quality of city services it supports, have been in steady decline for the last 25+ years. Productive, tax-paying citizens and the businesses that serve them have been leaving in droves for a long time. This has fueled the phenomenal growth in the neighboring parishes like Jefferson and St. Tammany.
Under the present circumstances, I expect that this trend will only accelerate now. The only money that's going to pay the bills in N.O. for some time to come is going to be federal aid. Nagin has not impressed me as being very rational. Not the sort of person you would want to lend your credit card to. The Feds better keep a really tight grasp on their checkbook.

Nagin is probably the ONLY honest one in the place.

Jeb Bush was just reporting on TV what he has ready including evacuating all hospitals and nursing homes as art of mandatory evacuation of Key West. What an idea! It's windy in south Florida now.

I have no prejudices and I was talking about Marion Berry, the former Mayor of DC who has been re-elected to everything he runs for despite his doing time in prison for using crack. Point being that the people who voted for Nagin before will vote for him again.
You should not accuse people of being prejudiced because they disagree with you - especially when you do not know them or their background. For all you know, I could be Black.

One does not have to live in NO to see the potential for corruption in a state that has historically been corrupted by its leaders. The behavior of this mayor is criminal and it just gets worse as the heat turns up with the truth.

200 buses to assist with evacuation

The city requested 200 buses to assist in an evacuation. They would start running 48 hours before landfall from the downtown convention center and a stadium in Algiers.
Wow, they got those buses fast. Someone must have told Nagin there were polling places to fill...
