U.S.: 2 al-Qaida Leaders Captured in Mosul

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition forces have arrested two alleged leaders of the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group, the U.S. military said Saturday.

The two men were identified as Taha Ibrahim Yasin Becher, whose alias was Abu Fatima, and Hamed Saeed Ismael Mustafa, also known as Abu Shahed. The statement said the two men, who were holding a meeting at the time of their capture, headed al-Qaida's organization in Iraq's third-largest city.

The statement said Abu Fatima took over as al-Qaida's top-ranking operative in Mosul 12 days ago, after his predecessor also was captured by coalition forces.

"The simultaneous capture of both leaders damages the organizational structure of al-Qaida in Iraq's northern network," Saturday's statement said.

On Thursday, Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch said the security forces had killed 226 militants and captured 757 in recent operations in Mosul and its vicinity. On Saturday, however, Iraqi authorities in Mosul announced that 500 detainees "who have not been proven guilty" had been released from detention.

Also Saturday, the military said that Iraqi forces and U.S. troops killed two insurgents and captured six in the city of Tal Afar, site of a major joint operation about 30 miles west of Mosul.

"turn them over to the Iraqis"

Problem is that we are seeing a lot of this...

"Iraqi authorities in Mosul announced that 500 detainees "who have not been proven guilty" had been released from detention".

Maybe "real" Al Qaida leaders need an all expense paid trip to GITMO to get their attention...

Is there a major squeeze going on in Iraq that is about to break the back of the insurgency once and for all? One would never know from the media...."

The press is praying that full blown success happens after Hillary takes office, so that she might take credit. Unfortunately the swamp of Iraq and NO may be drained to soon

Pretty impressive body count. There is a real war going on out there and we are winning.

Not a problem if those released were fitted with their very own low yield explosive tracking collar.

Detonation could be done by manually transmitting their code (thanks racehorse) or by auto mode.
In auto mode, If two collars come within ten feet of each other they both detonate.
Any tampering with the collar triggers detonation.

What are we doing capturing these vermin? This is a war, they all need to be killed. Jailing them just gives the 'rats over here something to whine about. Killing them with cruise missiles and bombs would be preferable instead of endangering our ground troops. This sounds too much like a "police action".

Iraq, Germany and New Zealand

A lot is happening this weekend. First, Iraq. The Security Watchtower site has a graphic listing all the military operations undertaken in Iraq as of September 16.

  • Multiple airstrikes in Qaim
  • Operations in Ar Rutbah in the far West
  • Operations in Haditha
  • Operations in Saqlawiyah
  • Operation "Flick Ticker" in Baghdad
  • Operation Royalty in Taji
  • Operations in Mosul
  • and Tal-Afar ("Operation Restoring Rights")

What's remarkable about this is that there have been 14 US KIA up to September 16. That is one third the rate for the period last year -- in a month of offensives. The attacks on Baghdad highlighted by the press, More Iraqis Joining Zarqawi's Cause, How troops struggle in a war raging on five fronts, Bombers Maintain Intense Attack included attacks on three American convoys wounding 10 but killing none.

See link for the rest of todays post.
