Posted on 09/16/2005 5:22:01 PM PDT by gusopol3

Hunt says well-organized gangs moved in, looted banks, jewelry stores. "It was as bad as the early days in Bagdad."

Not surprising given that Nagin, Blanco, and Phone Bill were openly endorsing looting.

risk their lives in small boats and even approaching in SUV's!??! Plueeease give me a break!! Just pure insanity and tin-foil hats!!!

Thank you. If Hunt said these were local Organized crimminals doing all the looting, I would have bought his story. or outsiders who had worked with several of the local gangs, I may have bought that if they had gotten there before the storm.

"Now, if a bunch of rotten tooth, illiterate hillbillies, (I can say that, because I am one), can organize an evacuation with personal communication, then what prevents "organize" crime gangs from doing the same?"

I think the more pressing question is, what prevents the NOPD or the LA State Troopers, et al, from doing the same?

I STILL don't understand how they lost ALL their communications. I can see how the NOPD would have lost theirs, but they are making it sound like every communication tower (or whatever, I don't know too much about this stuff) was sitting right smack in the middle of the flood zone.

In NYC after 9/11 a lot of phones were out, but cell phones mostly worked. I even managed to get through to NY from NJ on the land line by dialing an old discount access code from old NJ Bell that I remembered. The few folks who had no cable were reduced to one tv station only. And of course, the firemen's radios crapped out in the towers, but I think they've fixed that problem.

It seems clear to me that the pandemonium and mass death in New Orleans, none of which occurred during the storm, is due to the feckless "leaders" in charge down there.

Many of the businesses, banks, stores, and homes not downtown, (where the TV cameras were,) were completely destroyed by looters. There was wind damage to structures and very little flooding . A lack of police presence compounded their ability to roam at will. I got this from friends from NO. I have no reason to doubt them.

I doubt that there were out-of-state gangs in New Orleans. They have enough of their own.

Did you happen to see the interview on O'Really in which the older AA lady was hunting for her 44 year old autistic son, Vincent? (She had been taken home by a middle age Texan because she was just to "refined" for the shelter)......Have been wondering if they were reconnected.

Maybe they came in before the storm hit. I remember looking at pictures of the "supposed" conta flow lanes where inbound lanes were mostly empty, except for 1 or 2 cars and wondering who was going into NO. Maybe going in to evacuate a sick relative, OR maybe looter going in for an opportunity of a lifetime.
