9/16/2005, 4:41 p.m. CT The Associated Press BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Less than a year after he took the post, state Democratic Party Chairman Jim Bernhard stepped down from the leadership job Friday, saying he needs to focus on his engineering and construction company which is heavily involved in Hurricane Katrina rebuilding efforts. "The people of our state who have been so tremendously and adversely affected by this disaster require all the available help that exists, and I feel an obligation to contribute to those needs," Bernhard said in his resignation letter, released by the Louisiana Democratic Party. The letter was addressed to Mary Lou Winters, vice chair of the party, who takes over Bernhard's position. Andrew Koneschusky, spokesman for the state Democratic Party, said Bernhard's resignation didn't have anything to do with political upheaval because of the slow response to Katrina and criticisms of state officials over the handling of emergency response. Koneschusky said Bernhard is so busy in the hurricane reconstruction and recovery efforts that "he doesn't even know what's going on politically." Bernhard took over the post in January, replacing Mike Skinner, a former U.S. attorney who resigned after a series of stinging disappointments in the fall's congressional elections the loss of several congressional seats and the election of Louisiana's first Republican U.S. senator since Reconstruction, David Vitter.

Very interesting...
His voting base now lives in Houston, Texas. His Mayor and Governor now utterly hated by most Louisiana voters. A wise move.
And he'll have the added advantage of being so outta there WTSHTF, lol.
There's a lot of $$$$$$ coming his way. He did his job in preventing the Feds, and making the Pubbies look bad. Not he gets to clean up on the gold strike down South.
... And there's plenty of people to fleece with engineering and construction contracts. Much more profitable than running a corrupt state political party with the full spotlight of attention on it.
(With best fingertips tapping on his chin look going on)Umm, let's see....do I want to stay in a no-win dead-end job kissing up to the likes of Howard Dean, or....do the getting' while the gettin's good?
Well looky here.
Getting ready for his windfall. Amen!
"and pigs fly and the moon is made of green cheese."
So I guess he owns one of those evil corporations that will profiteer from the rebuilding efforts?
Although the Louisiana RATs have lost some US Congressional and 1 (one) Senate race, they rarely loose state elections. They own the House and the Senate and the Governorship.
In summary, they are bulletproof until the people of Louisiana have had enough, which I see no evidence yet.
Perhaps this storm will result in a major demographic shift against the RATs.
Ruh, roh. Now, just how much time will Nagin and Blanco do behind bars for their incompetence and criminal negligence?
Sounds like the sounds of "KA-CHING!" were too loud to have his attention diverted.
$teping down to focu$ on hi$ engineering company which i$ heavily involved in the Katrina di$a$ter rebuilding effort.
"GREED IS GOOD"
ROFLMAO!!!
Read: I can make a lot more money and I won't be investigated in the failures of the response while sitting in this position.
Blanco, Nagin. You're turn.
...and the money kept rolling in...
